SRINAGAR, July 14: The Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti fighting a lone battle to calm down the tempers in Kashmir has exposed the PDP ministers, who have preferred to maintain silence and stay indoors, despite Kashmir being pushed to the edge.
The PDP ministers have come under sharp criticism for remaining indoors amid the unrest in Kashmir and putting in no effort to reach out to the people to cool the tempers.
The south Kashmir, considered to be a citadel of ruling PDP, has been the worst hit as maximum killings have taken place in south Kashmir districts.
Public representatives (MLAs) have failed to make any efforts to either reach the district headquarters or the people calm down the situation in the first four days.
Sources said they ministers didn't help the Chief Minister to defuse the tension as they remained confined within four walls. They (ministers) didn't make any effort to visit any of the hospitals. Even Health Minister and his deputy failed to take the stock of the situation in the health institutions.
The Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, according to the sources, has taken a serious note of it and has directed the Ministers and MLAs to stay in their respective constituencies to monitor the situation, but Ministers and MLAs have preferred to stay indoors.
All these ministers and MLAs are carrying a posse of security men along with them. Despite having enough security they are not mustering courage but to come out of their big palatial houses. "These ministers and MLAs had a greater role to play but are not making any effort to calm down the tempers. Senior PDP leaders have slammed the ministers for their failure to live upto the expectations of the people. Even Mehbooba Mufti is unhappy the way the things are being handled and none from the ministers is helping her to defuse the tension," the PDP leader said.
On Wednesday although, some of the ministers visited their constituencies but only two of them were able to visit a hospital in south Kashmir. Sources said the top PDP leadership had told its ministers to appeal the people to maintain peace and calm and assure them that everything will be fine.
MLA Tral Mushtaq Ahmad Shah said he didn't move out of his house since the deadly protests broke out following the killing of Burhan Wani.
"I am in Tral and was not possible for me to move out and talk to the people as the situation was out of the control," the MLA Tral said. "They would not allow me to come out and talk to them."
"Everyone is trying his best to pacify the angry protestors so that normalcy returns," MLA Bijbehara Abdul Rehman Veeri, who is also Roads and Buildings department minister said.
MLA Sonawar Muhammad Ashraf Mir said, "Unfortunately, the situation was mishandled. The government and the security administration did not expect that so many people would give him (Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani) such a huge farewell."
He said a meeting of PDP legislators has not been called yet. "Once it happens, we will put forth our suggestions," he said.
