Kashmir violence toll reaches 48, Kupwara man succumbs | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 20: The death toll in continued violence in Kashmir valley reached 48 as one of the injured persons succumbed to his injuries at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital here today. Reports said that Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Mir son of Abdul Satar Mir, a resident of Khumryal-Lolab in North Kashmir's Kupwara district succumbed to his injuries at SMHS hospital here. Mir sustained serious injuries after he was hit by a bullet during a protest demonstration in his native area on July 16. His body reached his native place at around 4 PM following which some minor protests broke out in the area. With Mir's death, the death toll in Kashmir violence reached 48. The valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 after Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. A police spokesman said that today an elderly person Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Mir son of Abdul Satar Mir resident of Khumriyal, Kupwara died at SMHS Hospital, Srinagar. The spokesman said that the deceased had got a blunt injury on his head adding that the cause of which is being ascertained by the police. In the meantime, the situation remained normal by and large peaceful in Kashmir valley today with only few incidents of stone pelting being reported from some areas. However, at least three youth were injured after security forces personnel of 55 RR chased a group of protesters at Batnoor-Lassipora area of Pulwama district. Reports said the protesters had blocked the road and they attacked army vehicles with stones with the security forces personnel chased them to clear the road. The injured were shifted to hospital for treatment. The situation turned tense in the area with groups of people protesting against the action of security forces personnel. Reports said that stone pelting incidents took place in some areas of Srinagar district and other districts. Groups of agitated youth pelted stones on police and security forces personnel at Karan Nagar, Reki Chowk, Alasteng, Koundbal, Nowpora-Sopore, Sangam and Kaloosa in different districts of Kashmir. A police spokesman said that the situation remained under control throughout the Kashmir valley, though incidents of some stray stone pelting were reported. The spokesman said that stone pelting incidents took place at Nowpora in Sopore, Koundbal and Alesting in Ganderbal, Sangam in Anantnag, Kaloosa in Bandipora and Reck Chowk and Karan Nagar in Srinagar. Normal life remained paralyzed on 12th consecutive day across Kashmir due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike call given by the separatists All the districts of Kashmir continue to be under curfew or restrictions by state government. Strict curfew or restrictions were imposed in all the areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts. Barring the post paid mobile phones of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) the mobile phones are not working in the Kashmir valley. Mobile internet services and the rail service continue to be suspended ever since the valley was rocked by protests. For the fifth consecutive day the local newspapers failed to hit the newsstands in Kashmir valley. The state administration had on Saturday last issued directions to the editors of local newspapers of the valley to stop publication of the newspapers. Some of the printing presses were raided and subsequently sealed by police on the directions of the state government. However, the newspaper editors decided to resume their business from today and as such the newspapers would hit the stands on Thursday. The editors had a meeting with chief minister Mehbooba Mufti following which they decided to suspend their strike. |
