| Youth defy protest calendar near his residence | | Geelani eats a humble pie | | Early Times Report
srinagar, Sept 12: Strengthening their defiance against the protest calendar as being issued by the united Hurriyat, the youth here have started staging protests near the residence of senior separatist leader and Hurriyat G Chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, who is leading the ongoing agitation.
On September 11, when the Hurriyat had given call for relaxation in hartal from 6:00 PM, the youth came out on streets near Geelani's residence at Hyder Pora here and started pelting stones on vehicles driving down the Indra Gandhi Airport Road.
Witnesses said around 100 vehicles were damaged in the incident, which took place at a stone's throw from Geelani's residence. Sources said though some of the workers of the Hurriyat G tried to persuade the protesting youth not to pelt stones as it was relaxation period, the protesters responded saying "Who the hell is Hurriyat?"
Sources said the intervention of the Hurriyat leaders only agitated the youth further as they kept damaging the vehicles which ever came their way till late in the evening. Finally police had to rush in to bring situation under control.
"We are not going to listen to any Hurriyat and this is why we are pelting stones on vehicles which abide by the so called protest calendar," the stone pelters shouted.
Sources said the incident has shocked the Hurriyat leadership and they are apprehensive of the fate of their protest program.
This defiance to the Hurriyat calendar is despite the fact that the militant outfits like Lashkar E Taiba have openly asked the people to strictly follow the protest calendar.
It is for the second time within a week that the Hurriyat's protest program is being openly defied.
Earlier on September 10, the youth disallowed shopkeepers to open their shops during the relaxation as announced by the Hurriyat.
As per the protest calendar issued by the united Hurriyat, the markets were scheduled to open at 6:00 pm on the fateful day.
But as the poor traders opened their shops in Lal Chowk, and adjoining areas, a group of agitated youth, holding stones in their hands appeared in the area, asking the traders to close their shops.
The public defiance to the separatist calendar has started a day after the ruling Peoples Democratic Party led government openly criticized the separatists for issuing calendar which has put the people to hardships.
Ridiculing at the separatist leadership, senior PDP leader and Education minister Naeem Akhtar asked Geelani and other separatist leaders to tell people that schools and business establishments will remain closed till they achieve "freedom".
"Informal education is no solution to the present challenge of educational competition. Classroom atmosphere and attendance of students in laboratories and libraries is must for the competitive education," Akhtar maintained.
He hit out at separatist leadership for "crippling" education and economy of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Education and business are worst targets of the present unrest in Kashmir. Let Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his separatist colleagues tell the people that schools and business establishments will remain closed till they achieve their goal. It is necessary so that parents know what to do with the education of their children," Akhtar said.
"It would be better for separatist leadership to issue the protest calendar for entire year than issuing the weekly protest calendars," the Government spokesman said. |
