Security agencies apprehend a violent Eid | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 12: The security agencies have recommended to the government to impose curfew on Eid-ul-Azha tomorrow in Kashmir as they have got specific intelligence inputs that there is a possibility of violence on the festival in the Valley. A senior police officer said they have developed inputs from the field reports that some miscreants may create trouble in the Valley. "There are reports from security agencies that violence may erupt on Eid if strict restrictions are not put in place," the officer said. "Large Eid gatherings are likely to be prevented as have been suggested by the security agencies to the government to ensure there is no violence on Eid," the police officer said. " Government according to sources has decided to impose the curfew in parts of the Valley and tighten the security on Tuesday in view of separatists call for a march towards central Eidgahs at district, tehsil and town-levels and then march towards UNMOGIP Sonawar for submitting a memorandum to be conveyed to 71st Session of General Assembly of United Nations starting on September 13. "Although separatists are in jails but there are some of their henchmen who will try their best to create trouble in the Valley," the police officer added. A senior official said there would certainly be restrictions to stop the cycle of violence. "This Eid is critical as some elements are hell bent on ensuring that the cycle of violence does not stop. We are privy to such developments and will ensure trouble free Eid. Government has decided to impose restrictions after separatists call for the UN March," the official said. Authorities have decided to make additional deployment of security personnel in sensitive places on this festival and police and civil administration have been directed to monitor the situation closely. Apprehending further deterioration of already fragile law and order problem in the state, sources said the government has directed the police and district civil administration officers to be available at their district headquarters to closely monitor the situation. The authorities had a bitter experience in the past, when protests broke out in several parts of Kashmir valley during festivals, prompting authorities to impose restrictions. However, police sources said adequate security arrangements will be made across the state to avoid recurrence of such incidents. |
