New Delhi, Oct 7: Minister of State for Tourism, Education , and culture has reiterated the commitment of the government to promote J&K as round the year tourist destination keeping in view the rich cultural diversity which the three regions of the state offers to the tourists .
The minister is right as long as richness of cultural diversity of the state is concerned but nothing tangible has been done to achieve the goal.
The talk of making the state an all season destination has been there for quite some time now but apart from holding road shows across the country and outside, the authorities have virtually done nothing.
Katra which houses the sacred Mata Vaishnav Devi shrine narrates the story of official apathy. What facilities have been given to the pilgrims. Piles of garbage, stinky toilets greet them the moment they enter the town.
The government could not do anything when most of the airlines increased their fare at the beginning of the season this year. Tourist players of the state believe the rising air fares resulted in decline of domestic tourist arrivals.
The roads from Srinagar to almost all the tourist destinations are in bad shape. The frequent traffic jams on important roads adds to the woes of the tourists. Two years ago, an important member from the Ambani family who was in the valley to explore possibilities of investing in tourism sector had to return to Mumbai after being stuck in a massive jam near Athwajan for more than three hours.
Apart from delivering lectures on tourism promotion and holding road shows, let the authorities provide the much needed infrastructure in all the three regions state if they are serious in making the state an all season destination. |
