Docs play with human lives, Prescribe sub-standard medicine for money | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 7: The spurious drug issue continues to haunt the people of Jammu and Kashmir as doctors in many areas of the State prescribe sub-standard drugs despite mass resentment by the civil society and Doctors Association over the issue. Well Informed sources told early TIMES that the doctors particularly the Junior Consultants, Registrars, Post-Graduates and House Surgeons in different government hospitals are prescribing drugs from a particular pharmaceutical company. "The names of these pharmaceutical companies don't even exist in the list of reputed companies that produce quality medicines," sources revealed. Government hospitals have become a source of huge revenue generation for these lesser known companies and doctors, who have amassed crores of rupees. Early TIMES is in possession of prescriptions which indicate that the doctors prescribe drugs from a particular company. Sources revealed that the doctors prescribe few particular brands of a company to every patient whether required or not. "Some of the doctors prescribe the medicines to the patients, who don't even need them and even the patients suffering from other diseases are also prescribing a particular brand only to benefit the company and surge its sales in the market," sources said. Wishing anonymity one of the senior doctors from SMHS hospital admitted that such things do prevail in a number of hospitals and we really want the authorities to take stern action against every erring doctor". Sources said that hundreds of doctors in the state are paid healthy Incentives to prescribe the substandard drugs. "A well established company gives 10-15% while a newcomer in pharmaceutical market may give around 30% to 40%. (Say 30% on an average) to an established doctor". Sources said that commission which doctors earn from these companies is not always in monetary form; it may be a gift or product, or a sponsored holiday trip to abroad. |
