Building norms violated with impunity in Srinagar during unrest | | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct:7: Taking the advantage of unrest in Kashmir since July 08, multiple illegal constructions are going on unabated in Srinagar city while the concerned authorities are watching as mute spectators. The influential persons have constructed many buildings alongside main roads in brazen violation of norms. According to the reports coming from different areas, the constructions have mainly been carried out in the areas of Ahmad Nagar, HMT, Ali Jan road and Hyderpora. Top land sharks and influential persons in nexus with the concerned authorities have taken the advantage of unrest and constructed the big buildings without following the proper norms. Sources in the SMC confirmed to Early Times that few residents at Ali Jan road have managed to erect the structures and added that there are many who do not even possess the land documents. "A top influential person of zoonimar area, who has been close with politicians, within no period of time has constructed the 3rd storey of his house despite the fact that there is a proper procedure in place which has to be followed while raising the structures. He completed the work within 15 days just with a purpose that the construction should not come in the notice of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC),"sources said. "At HMT, another area of the Srinagar city a shop has been constructed near Noora Hospital on the land notified for the purpose of road widening, "source added. While admitting the fact, a top official of SMC, who pleased not to be named, said that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is fully aware about the encroachments taking place at different places in Srinagar. The authority will take strict action against the encroachers once the normalcy returns back to valley. "We have full knowledge of encroachments taking place at different places but the drive against the encroachers is in progress and many illegal constructions have been demolished and we will strengthen our demolition drive against such structures," he said. He said that due to the unrest in the valley the FIRs against the violators could not be initiated as police showed reluctance to lodge the FIRs on account of law and order situation prevailing in the valley. SMC has also served notices to many encroachers asking them to dismantle the structures themselves or face the action besides has asked them to produce the documents if at all they possess. Drive launched by Lakes and Water Development Authority (LAWDA) is also underway to throw away the encroachers who have erected structures in the green belt area. |
