UN Chalo call foiled as authorities impose curfew, enforce restrictions in Srinagar | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 7: The UN chalo call given by separatist leaders was foiled by the authorities as curfew and restrictions were imposed in the downtown as well as uptown areas of Srinagar district. At the same time life continues to be paralyzed in Kashmir due to continuous shutdown. Authorities imposed curfew in areas falling under police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Safa Kadal, Nigeen, Maisuma and Batmaloo of the summer capital of the state. Elsewhere, restrictions were imposed by the authorities in order to ensure that the day passes off peacefully without any untoward incident. Reports said that all the roads leading towards the office of United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) at Sonwar here were sealed. Police and security forces erected barricades and placed concertina wires on all these roads so that the UN chalo call is foiled. Separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik had asked people of the Kashmir valley to march towards the UNMOGIP office and register their protest with the world body. People had been asked to offer the congregational Friday prayers at Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) and Dalgate. However, the imposition of curfew and enforcement of restrictions foiled the separatists plan with nobody reaching the venue of protest. Meanwhile, protests broke out in some areas of Kashmir valley with some persons sustaining injuries during these incidents. A 12-year-old boy was critically injured in Srinagar's Eidgah area when he was hit by pellets during the clashes in the locality that erupted between youth and security forces. The youth identified as Junaid was hit by pellets in chest and head. Clashes erupted between youth and security forces in Soura area here during which security forces used tear smokes shells to disperse the agitating youth. Clashes erupted between youth and security forces at Barzulla during which security forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth. The youth pelted stones with the same being returned by lobbing of smoke shells. Clashes also erupted in the Chanapora area of summer capital. Some people sustained injuries during the clashes between youth and security forces in Batapora and Kanihama areas of Central Kashmir's Budgam district. Security forces used tear gas shells and pellets to disperse the youth who threw stones on them. Security forces foiled the peaceful protests in Gulshan Chowk area of Bandipora district by resorting to tear gas canisters triggering clashes in the area. Clashes also erupted in Hajin area during which security forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth during which three youth sustained injuries. Clashes also broke out in the Sopore area of Baramulla district. Clashes erupted between youth and security forces in Goriwan area of Bijbehara town in Anantnag district during which security forces used tear gas canisters to disperse them. Reports of clashes and protests were also reported from some areas in Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts of South Kashmir. According to a statement issued by Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, in view of the UN Chalo call given by some separatist organizations and also the violence resorted to by 'miscreants' on last few Fridays, curfew was imposed in few police stations of Srinagar city as a precautionary measure. The statement said that during the day eleven incidents of stone pelting were reported from Srinagar, Baramulla and Sopore. The situation remained under control and there was no report of any untoward incident. "Meanwhile, continuing with its efforts to neutralize the activities of the miscreants and hooligans, 56 persons found involved in different crimes of creating public disorder have been arrested during the last 24 hours," the statement said. |
