Anantnag, Nov 5: To ensure the safety of school buildings, a zone education officer (ZEO) in this southern districted has deputed female teachers for night duties.
According to the roster, Aishmuqam ZEO Ghulam Mohiudin has assigned the job of monitoring and safeguarding the school buildings during night to female teachers, who are said to be performing duties along with their parents in their respective schools.
"We have no problem in guarding the school buildings during the day time, although this fresh assignments is disgracing," a female teacher said.
The inclusion of female staff in the night duty roster has already angered the teachers' community. "It is very disturbing that female teachers have been included in the night duty roster. Any untoward incident with them during night in the schools can have serious consequences," a group of female teachers said.
The ZEO admits that it is a wrong decision. "Actually I have not prepared the roster. It was my subordinate who did it but I will look into it and females will be excluded," he said.
Chief Education Officer (CEO), Anantnag, Ghulam Rasool has too assured to exempt female teachers from night duties.
As the school burning incidents have shown an upward trend in Kashmir, the director school education (DSE) has directed all CEOs of Kashmir to ensure protection of school buildings by deploying chowkidars, CPWs and local teachers.
"In order to ensure safeguard of schools, at least one official shall remain physically present round the clock and duty rosters of chowkidars, CPWs and local teachers shall be prepared and implemented," reads the DSE's circular.
In those schools, where chowkidars are not available, schools heads have assigned the job of monitoring and performing night duties to teachers including females.
Early Times has also learnt from reliable sources that most of the male teachers, who have been assigned night duties, have started hiring 'helpers' for the job.
