Srinagar witnesses coldest night as minimum temp dips to minus 0.2 | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 8: The summer capital, Srinagar, witnessed the coldest night of the season so far with the minimum temperature recording a further drop and settling at minus 0.2 degrees. Though the Sun was out today, icy cold winds continued. However, at the world famous health resort of Pahalgam, a number of water bodies besides taps were frozen after the night temperature witnessed a further drop and settled at minus 4.6 degrees. A Met department spokesman said the weather would remain dry during the next 48 hours which could result in further drop in the night temperature but the day will be near normal in the Kashmir valley, where life remained crippled due strike called by separatists. It was coldest night of the winter so far after the minimum temperature recorded a further drop and settled at minus 0.2 degree, more than four notches below normal in the city, where business and other activities remained shut. The morning walkers, including women and children, could be seen wearing woollen clothes with their faces and head covered because of chilly winds. However, the Sun was playing hide and seek. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was 19.9 degrees, two notches above normal despite winds. However, Pahalgam, about 100 km from here which remains deserted with tourists around due to unrest for the past four months in the valley, was coldest in the valley. The minimum temperature witnessed further drop and it was minus 4.6 degree, about five notches below normal. Water bodies and taps were frozen at several places during the night but melted as the day progressed due to above normal maximum temperature. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway also recorded sub zero temperature, he said, adding it was minus 1.2 degree more than three notches below normal. Kupwara, a frontier district in north Kashmir recorded minus 0.8 degree minimum temperature, two degree below normal. However, despite all odds troops remain on high alert to foil any infiltration bid from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) where large number of militants are waiting to sneak into this side before the higher reaches are closed due to snowfall. |
