Participants demand opening of schools, carrying out dialogue, action against 'miscreants' | Separatists face tough questions | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 8: The day long marathon meeting between the various stakeholders with separatist leaders here today 'exposed' the separatists to some harsh realities that have come up in Kashmir due to the shutdown that is going on for more than four months now. Reports said that people belonging to different sections of society dropped in at the residence of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani at Hyderpora to discuss the situation that has emerged following the continuous shutdown in Kashmir. Separatist leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik were already present in the meeting when the other stakeholders joined it. Sources told Early Times that some of stakeholders raised issues that have come up of late in Kashmir due to the continuous shutdown. These people mentioned about bsome of the difficulties that Kashmiris are facing due to the continuous shutdown and wanted solution to such difficulties. "During the meeting some of the participants referred to the setback caused to the education sector in Kashmir. It was impressed upon the separatists to devise a strategy so that the education of children does not suffer anymore in Kashmir. The importance of education was spelt out by some of the stakeholders and they opined that future of Kashmir would be bleak in case children are deprived of education," said sources. Sources said that these people voiced concern over the continuous lockdown of the schools and colleges in Kashmir and referred to the same as disturbing 'situation'. The importance of throwing open the educational institutions was highlighted by many people during the meeting and they demanded that education should no longer be a 'casualty' in Kashmir. "In the meeting some of the stakeholders asked the separatists to be flexible vis-à-vis dialogue with New Delhi. The stakeholders said that issues can be solved only through dialogue and there is no alternative to it. The separatist leaders were asked to devise ways and means so that dialogue is carried out for finding a solution to the problems of common masses in Kashmir," said sources. Sources said that while most of the people were in favour of continuing with shutdown there were many who said that continuous strike would not lead to any solution to the present crisis. The people opposing the shutdown said that Kashmiris are suffering due to the continuous strike and said that some alternative has to be found out. They said that people are suffering huge economic losses due to the continuous strike. "During the meeting the issue regarding attacks on private vehicles and shops during the relaxation period in protest calendar also came up for discussion. The separatists were urged to take effective steps in this regard so that such attacks are stopped once for all. It was also impressed upon separatist leaders to expose the persons responsible for carrying out attacks on civilian property," said sources. A joint statement issued by separatist leaders said that a meeting of different organizations and associations was held at Hyderpora in which stake holders from all walks of life participated. Representatives of religio-political & social organizations, trade and transport fraternity, educationists, intellectuals, lawyers and others participated in the said meeting, from whom opinions and suggestion where sought regarding the current phase of the 'movement'. |
