The sinking of land outside the tunnel where the rocks are protected with rock bolts , shot crete and wire mesh are sinking and now the re-maintenance of work on this portion is starting again by the construction company engaged on it. It is now expected that this tunnel will be open for the traffic in the end of November this year. However sources within the project said that they are trying their best to complete the work of this tunnel up to November in all respects but it can be take couple of months more up to January next year to open for the general traffic. This four lane tunnel on highway is fully equipped with latest technology including CCTV cameras, fire fighting equipments, with one more extra escape cum maintenance and emergency tunnel and latest monitoring system . The road length between Nashri and Chanani is presently about 41 kilometer and the length of this tunnel is 9 kilometer and after its completion it reduces about 31 kilometer of road length on hectic 300 kilo meter long Jammu Srinagar National highway . The commuters, drivers and general people are eagerly waiting for the completion of this tunnel who travels regularly on this highway. The construction work on this 9 .2 kilo meter long Nashri _chanani four lane tunnel on NHW -44 which is known as NHA-1 of its old name was started in the year of July 2011 and the National highway authority of India (NHAI) allot the construction work of this tunnel to IFSL limited namely construction agency who then gives the contract of this tunnel to a foreign construction company namely WELPSUN LEIGHTON LTD. The construction/ excavation work at that time on this tunnel was started on 23 may 2011 on the both ends (portals) of this tunnel in full bloom with latest techniques and completed the excavation work of this nine kilo meter long four lane tunnel before the fixed date in two years and nine months of record time period by the foreign construction company and the deadline for completion of the project was fixed may 2016 . Later this company again continued its work in full swing and the delay in construction started in this tunnel some three years ago when this foreign company left this project on some issues with the principal contractor IFSL. According to sources the foreign company at that time alleged that the IFSL has not give them the full amount of maintenance of old highway from Nashri to Kud which they maintained during the winters specially. On the issue he said company at that time winds their equipments and leave the project. Later the balance work of this tunnel was given to a local company BCC who is presently constructing this tunnel . Sources said that this tunnel had missed so many dead lines of completion , the first deadline was fixed by the authorities as may 2016 then it was extended up to 30 June 2016 due to some geological complications at north end of the tunnel at Nashri, and then again the date of completion of the tunnel has extended up to July 2016 and then again October 2016 and this deadline of completion also missed the project . Now according to project sources there is no dead line fixed for the completion of this tunnel and up the end of this year or staring of new year the general traffic can be allowed to move from this tunnel and up to the time the commuters travel on this highway have to wait for some couple of months more. The National Highway authority of India (NHAI) has spent 3,720 crore on this project which has two tubes the main tunnel and escape tunnel .These two tunnels are internally connected to each other through 29 cross passages on every 300 meters of distance, in case of vehicle breakdown it has parking spots inside also .
