Damaged Qazigund-Budagm rail line needs 20 days for restoration | | | Saahil Suhail

Anantnag, Nov 14: Northern railway Engineers say they need twenty consecutive working days for restoring the Qazigund-Budagm rail line that has suffered damage worth crores during the Kashmir unrest. Sectional Engineer at Srinagar Budgam, Azim Mohd told Early Times that the restoration work will be started once the government restores complete normalcy. "Normalcy is must for restoration process. The rail line has suffered damage so we need all most twenty (20) working days to restore the line," he said. He said that miscreants have stolen or removed the Pandrol clips at various places which they has to be fit again. "Pandrol clips are missing and we to fit it again," he added. The Engineer, who is supervising the rail line, said that track has suffered most damage in between Anantnag and Pulwama. A spot visit reveals pandrol clips missing from the rail line at various places and electric cables disconnected. "Miscreants removed these iron pandrols to sell them during crisis," a group of locals from Shoul-Bategoo said. In Indian Railways Pandrol clips are called Elastic Rail Clips and are being extensively used on high-speed lines in the Indian Railways and are giving good service. Train operation in the Kashmir region is proving to be white elephant for the Indian Railways, and the unrest in the Valley made things worse. A media report quoting Northern Railway CPRO Neeraj Sharma said that Railways incur nearly Rs 80 crore on train operation in Kashmir, as against the daily income of Rs 3 lakh. The Railways has been spending nearly Rs 80 crore annually on operations and maintenance of 137-km rail network between Banihal and Baramulla. The annual Railway earning in Kashmir valley is nearly Rs 10 crore, which leads to a loss of Rs 70 crore per year, on the national transporter. According to Northen Railway, after the killing of terrorist Burhan Wani, railway in Kashmir has suffered a loss of over Rs 2 crore. A number of railway properties were damaged which forced the authorities to suspend train operations in the Valley since July 9. It has been almost four months but the Northen Railway has not started resortoring the Qazigund-Budgam rail line which has suffered most damage as angry protesters attacked the railway installations at multiple places in south Kashmir including at Panjgam, Malangpora, Pampore and Hillar. Security Officials say that rail traffic will resume only the line is restored completely. |
