Jammu University goes the Kashmir way

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 14: Jammu University is not the University which was established in 1969 to give the struggling people of Jammu Province a house of learning. Establishment of Jammu University was not an ordinary event; it was an extraordinary event in the sense that at least four young students of Jammu sacrificed their lives and hundreds suffered injuries as a result of the brutal use of force against the unarmed peaceful youth demanding an end to the discriminatory policies and also demanding also establishment of a separate and full-fledged University in Jammu. The establishment of this highest house of learning was celebrated by one and all.
The Jammu University became a premier institution of learning not only in the state but across the country and it was headed by great academicians. It produced highly brilliant students, who held and continue to hold top positions in the Governments of J&K and at the Centre. One of Jammu University students even rose to become the Union Home Secretary and another student became the Chief justice of India - Tirth Sintgh Thakur, who still heads the apex court.
It is not that University which produced such highly talented and competent students. It has gone the Kashmir way and it has become the replica of Kashmir University where many teachers indulge in anti-national activities and give the separatists "intellectual inputs". Its Vice-Chancellor himself has crossed the lines and taken the line the Kashmiri separatists and all the Kashmiri parties took as far as the lawful killing of Hizbul Mujahideen's Kashmir commander Burhan Wani on July 8 was concerned.
Kashmiri separatists, so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders belonging to all Kashmiri parties, all civil society groups, activists in the Kashmir University and Kashmir-based Universities and Kashmiri opinion makers and commentators, trader and other associations and human rights outfits all in one voice condemned his killing and glorified him as a Kashmir's hero. They all fomented trouble in Kashmir and Kashmir is still not really normal by any yardstick.
The Jammu University Vice-Chancellor virtually blamed the security forces for all the troubles that Kashmir witnessed following Burhan's killing. He, like many Kashmiri parties, said in a most brazen and shameless manner that killing of Burhan should have been avoided and he should have been only arrested. Not just this, he even tore into the state government by saying that it had to be careful while dealing with militants who had sympathizers in public.
Questioned the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, the Jammu University Vice-Chancellor, RD Sharma, said that "he should have been caught alive and later sent to jail" and that the "Government needs to be careful while dealing with the militants who have sympathizers in public".
"As Kashmir is a sensitive issue awaiting solution for the last over 70 years, it is the time we should change our strategy on Kashmir. We have to be careful in dealing with those militants who have footing at the grass-root level or who have well-wishers in public," he told reports during a media interaction convened at his office chamber, and added that "no doubt militants get killed in anti-militancy operations, but India has to introspect now as to why people were up in arms in Kashmir over the killing of Burhan Wani". He virtually blamed New Delhi for all the mess in the Valley.
His were the most nasty statements and his statements were appreciated in Kashmir by all the anti-nationals. In contrast, his statements shocked and outraged the nationalist people of Jammu province, who condemned his in downright language and the memory of what he said still linger in their mind. Left to them, they would have taken the Vice-chancellor to task for polluting the University of Jammu and converting his office into a den of anti-national activities.
It was expected that the Chancellor of the University would act and take action against him but nothing of the sort has happened. All this has added a new dimension to the ongoing separatist movement in the Valley with the separatists condemning the security forces exploiting his his highly objectionable statements.
