Principal DIET sells poplar trees worth lakhs for peanuts | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Anantnag, Nov 17: Throwing norms to winds, Principal District Institution of Education and Trainings (DIET) Anantnag has allegedly sold poplar trees worth lakhs for peanuts to a blue-eyed contractor during March-April this year. Highly placed sources told Early Times that the Principal DIET Anantnag Mohd Abdullah, under the garb of complying with High Court directions regarding the chopping of Russian poplars, sold a dozen Kashmiri poplars to a blue-eyed contractor in violation of the norms. The poplar trees were standing on the rear side of the DIET main building and were worth lakhs of rupees, sources claimed. They said that laid down procedure wasn't fallowed for auctioning the poplar trees from which the Department would have generated huge revenue. "Principal DIET isn't competent to sell the property of the institute. He should have sought approval of Director School Education and later contacted settlement commissioner or related authority for auctioning the poplar trees," an official, pleading anonymity said. He claimed the erring officer even did not inform Deputy Commissioner Anantnag before selling the trees to his aide. "He (Principal) shocked us by revealing that he had sold poplar trees worth lakhs in just rupees forty thousand," Officer claimed, adding that Principal DIET Anantnag in nexus with the blue-eyed contractor earned a huge amount from illegal auction of poplar trees. He claimed that higher-ups of the education department were informed about the scam but they preferred silence and succumbed under political pressure. "Principal DIET is a Bijbehara resident and is enjoying political patronage," they added. Interestingly, the scam has put the 'honesty' hallmark of former Director School Education at stake. "Wasn't he (former Director School Education) aware of this scam? If he was, why he couldn't take action against the erring officer or if he wasn't it simply proves that he hasn't done justice with his job," argued an employee Repeated attempts failed to contact Director School Education Kashmir. |
