Life slowly returning to normal in Kashmir, movement of public transport picks up | Train services start between Srinagar, Budgam | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 17: Life is slowly but surely returning to normalcy in Kashmir as the movement of public transport has increased in different parts of valley over the past couple of weeks. Shops and commercial establishments have also started functioning in most parts of Kashmir. Reports reaching here said that public transport consisting of Tata Sumos and mini-buses has started plying on the roads in the different districts of Kashmir. The plying of the public transport is providing a semblance of normalcy in the valley. The movement of private transport has picked up to a great extent over the past one month or so. The movement of public and private transport forced the separatist leaders to give full day relaxation for two full days in their next protest calendar. The weekly protest calendar as announced by separatist leaders said that no shutdown would be observed on November 19 and 20. The separatists also announced relaxation in the evening from 4 PM onwards on November 23 and 24. People have been asked to observe complete shutdown on November 18, 21 and 22. It would be in place to mention here that separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik have faced criticism for prolonging shutdown in Kashmir. A section of transporters called on these leaders and asked them to give relaxation in their shutdown programme so that they earn their livelihood. Pertinently the transporters have suffered huge losses due to the continuing shutdown in the Kashmir valley. Since most of the transporters have availed loan facility from the banks the continued unrest has resulted into a situation where these people are not able to pay the monthly instalments to the respective banks. Over the past 10 days the mini-buses have started plying on some of the routes in the summer capital of the state. Before this Tata Sumos that constitute important component of public transport in Kashmir were seen plying to different districts of Kashmir from Srinagar. The movement of Tata Sumos has picked up considerably in the recent past and people are facing less problems in reaching their respective destinations. The easing of situation can also be gauged by the fact that railway service between Srinagar and Budgam started today. It may take couple of weeks before the train service runs in full-fledged manner between Banihal in Jammu division and Baramulla in Kashmir division. Railway tracks have suffered huge damages during the more than four month long unrest in Kashmir. The damages are more in South Kashmir than the other parts of the valley. Reports said that Northern Railway officials are busy in repairing damages caused to the rail tracks in the valley. The rail service has come up as cheap mode of transport in Kashmir more so to those living in the rural areas of Central, South and North Kashmir. Ever since trouble broke out in Kashmir train services have remained suspended and they got resumed partially today after a gap of 130 days. |
