Defunct garbage dumpers puncture SMCs' Swachh Bharat Mission | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 23: The vehicles meant for carrying garbage in various Municipal Committees (MCs) across kashmir are said to be defunct and authorities are least bother for their maintenance. As per sources majority of the vehicles are parked inside of office premises of these Municipal Committees and nobody is bothered to get them repaired which is directly affecting the sanitation work of Municipal Committees across the state. Details available with Early Times reveal that as many as three dozen load carriers in Municipal Committees of Ganderbal, Bandipora, Sumbal, Budgam, Pulwama, Pampore are totally dysfunctional from last several years. The officials did not bother to get them repaired at the right time and now after so many years these vehicles have themselves become garbage dumps which is a great loss to state exchequer. "There were some vehicles which needed M-oil, some had defunct battery, few vehicles needed engine oil, but due to callous attitude of the drivers posted in various Municipal Committees , these minor repairs could not be done at the right time and now we have incurred a loss of more than 20 lakhs in just 6 Municipal Committees. If we calculate this loss in all the 89 MC's across state , the damage would be of more than Rs 2 crores " said a senior official of Urban Local Bodies. There are heavy vehicles purchased by Directorate of Local Bodies in Kashmir & Jammu provinces meant for garbage collection, but they were hardly used and many of these vehicles are getting rusted in the MC offices or have been damaged deliberately by the drivers, allege some officials of ULB deptt. Due to absence of vehicles, garbage is hardly carried and disposed in proper scientific manner. As already reported Municipal Committee (MC) Ganderbal from the date of its establishment has not been allotted any land for garbage dumping site. The constituency has been represented by Omar Abdullah as well in past, but during NC rule also the town could not get a garbage dumping site. As per reliable sources all the garbage which includes bio degradable , non bio degradable and even bio medical waste is dumped in local nallah Sindh and other wetlands of the district.
