Anantnag LS by-polls likely to be postponed, decision expected today | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 23: The Election Commission of India is likely to take a final decision on by-election for Anantnag Parliamentary seat on Thursday. J&K's Chief Electoral Official told Early Times that he is meeting Chief Election Commissioner of India on Thursday. "I am attending annual conference in New Delhi and I am also supposed to meet Chief Election Commissioner regarding holding by-election for Anantnag parliamentary seat," he said and added that ECI is likely to take a final decision Thursday on whether to hold the election in December or defer it for some time. Highly placed sources told Early Times that though the by-poll for Anantnag segment was supposed to be held in December and the J&K Chief Electoral Office was gearing for the same, the Election Commission of India was likely to defer the elections for some time. However sources said that for deferring the election, the approval from the Parliament was required. Sources believed that since the parliament was in session, the Election Commission has written to President Pranab Mukherjee for issuing an ordinance to defer the by-election. Meanwhile, if sources are to be believed then Election Commission is also considering to hold LS by-election for both Srinagar and Anantnag constituencies on the same date. The Anantnag seat had fallen vacant after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who represented the constituency in the LoK Sabha, resigned on July 4 following her election to the Legislative Assembly. The Srinagar LS seat had fallen vacant in September after PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra resigned from the party as well as Lok Sabha. Chief Electoral Officer J&K had forwarded the report on Anantnag by-poll to the Election Commission. "November 17 was the deadline set by the ECI to send the report on the Anantnag by-poll. After taking the view of political parties, I have forwarded the report to the Election Commission for taking final view," the CEO had said. However he had not ruled out the deferment of the elections. It is to mention here that the PDP-BJP government had written to the ECI to defer the Anantnag parliamentary by-election, arguing that the situation was not conducive for free and fair polls. Sources said that after receiving a letter from the state government, the ECI had written to the CEO to send his report by November 17 after taking all political parties of the state on board. Sources said that the PDP in the All Party Meeting, wanted Anantnag by-poll to be deferred in view of present law and order problem. Similarly, sources said that BJP has also endorsed the PDP stand for deferring the Anantnag election to April. |
