Bukhari's murder: Mehbooba's negligence manifest
6/28/2018 11:25:07 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, June 28: With police naming four Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists in the killing of journalist Shujaat Bukhari, many people are asking why the Mehbooba-led government chose to ignore the deceased's requests for increasing his security cover. One of the names that surfaced in the investigation led by the Jammu and Kashmir police is Pakistani terrorist Naveed Jatt who had a dramatic escape earlier this year from a Srinagar hospital in full public glare while killing two cops on the spot.
Reports had suggested that Naveed was living like a normal life inside Srinagar Central Jail. "Mehbooba failed Kashmiris by focusing on appeasing stone-pelters and neglecting her duties to protect journalists like Bukhari. She must face the music from common Kashmiris," says a Srinagar-based political analyst. The crocodile tears Mehbooba Mufti shed in front of the camera on hearing about the gruesome murder of Bukhari by Pakistani terrorist spy agency ISI was not out of sympathy rather it was to hide her failure to protect him.
Bukhari had reportedly met Mehbooba some days before his murder in Srinagar's Press Enclave and requested her to increase his security as a vicious online campaign was launched against him from Pakistani soil.
"There is no doubt that the ISI's dirty work was carried out by the local terrorists, but Mehbooba is equally responsible for his killing as he was denied an increased security by her," says the analyst.
Some analysts say that Mehbooba viewed media as her adversary as it refused to toe the official line most of the times. Rising Kashmir, the newspaper edited by Bukhari, was a staunch opponent of Mehbooba's policies and batted for peace in the region. "This reflects how ill-informed she remained during her tenure as the CM of the state. She couldn't fathom the gravity of the situation after a vicious online campaign was launched against Bukahri," says another analyst.
"Time has come that government of India calls Mehbooba's bluff and she must face the book for not protecting the vulnerable Kashmiris," the analyst says.
Notably, on Thursday the J&K police said that the conspiracy to murder Shujaat Bukhari was hatched by Lashkar-e-Toiba and the plans were made in Pakistan. Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, IG (Kashmir) SP Pani said: "We have tangible evidence to establish these were done from Pakistan. The evidence we have in cooperation of service providers is that they belong to Pakistan."
Pani released names and photographs of four people identified in the murder of Bukhari which include Sajjad Gul, LeT operative from Srinagar, Azad Ahmad Malik alias Dada from Anantnag, Muzafar Ahmad Bhat and Naveed Jatt. Police said that while Naveed Jatt was active in south Kashmir while Gul is in Pakistan.
The police in its investigation found the use of social media in plotting the conspiracy to kill Bukahri. Gul was earlier arrested by Delhi Police in 2003, and later in 2016 by J&K police in terror cases. IG Pani said, "Gul left the country in March 2016, and a lookout notice is being procured against him. We have strong evidence which establishes that it was done by him."
Bukhari was gunned down outside his office in Srinagar on June 14. Two of his personal security officers were also killed in the attack. Police had released CCTV footage of three attackers on a motorcycle. While one was wearing a helmet, another was wearing a mask.
