Construction of Semi Ring Road: Felling of fruit trees stayed by HC | Govt directed to make fresh assessment | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 28: The affected farmers of Budgam and Srinagar whose land is going to be acquired for Semi Ring Road got a great relief from High Court after the Jammu & Kashmir High Court stayed the felling of fruit trees. The High Court has directed the Government to undertake fresh assessment within 28 days. Details available with Early Times reveals that High Court (vacation) bench of Justice M K Hanjura in Srinagar ordered that Government must undertake fresh assessment of the fruit bearing trees in Budgam and Srinagar wherein farmers allege that compensation paid on account of fruit trees was too less and was not enhanced at all from last 23 years. After almost 23 years Government had decided to revise the rates for compensation provided in lieu of fruit trees which are to be cut down during the process of Land Acquisition. Government through Department of Horticulture had constituted a committee which was to submit report to administrative department by January 1st week, but till date the report hasn't been submitted and rates are yet to be revised. This prompted the farmers to knock High Court doors. On the other hand collector Land Acquisition had started disbursing compensation in Srinagar Budgam and Pulwama area on the existing rate which according to orchardists is very meager. As reported already the land owners whose land is to be acquired by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for construction of ring and semi ring roads in Jammu / Kashmir regions are aghast for being paid very less compensation. Government pays compensation @ Rs 16 per KG for apple tree / Mango which is to be cut down and the assessment is made by Horticulture Department. Now it has been decided by the constituted committee that compensation may be doubled. "Apple sells @ Rs 50 to 60 /Kg in wholesale market and it is sheer injustice with us if we are paid mere Rs 16 / Kg. I appeal Governor N N Vohra , his advisors, Secretary Horticulture and Director Horticulture Kashmir to come to our rescue " said Fayaz Ahmad of Ranbir Grah Srinagar. |
