Srinagar, July 9: In a worrying scenario, at least six persons have gone missing in Kashmir in the first week of the month of July. Among these six is also a non-local, creating apprehensions among the people over the growing trend of disappearances. According to official figures of police department, Muskan, 17, alias Gudiya, a resident of Gurdaspur Punjab was staying in Hotel Mehar at Rajbagh. On July 2, she went out of the hotel and did not return. A police spokesperson said that another mysterious case of disappearance was reported the following day. "On July 3, Aashiq Ahmad Shiekh stated that his wife Warsha, aged 20, went missing from Khyber Hospital, Srinagar," the spokesperson said. Two days later, one more missing case surfaced. On July 5, Ghulam Mohammed Bhat, a resident of Mattan reported his son, Rouf Ghulam Bhat went out of his home and did not return. On the same day another missing case was reported. Ghulam Rasool Parry, a resident of Chanapora stated in a complaint that his 18-year-old daughter Talya Rasool had gone to school and did not return. On July 6, Aabid Ali Sheikh, In-charge Shahjar Home Inderhama Hostel of boarding school Shahjar, reported that a student Altaf Ahmad Mir, 14, had gone missing after leaving for school. One more case of missing person was reported on July 7. A lady Ranjeet Kour hailing from south Kashmir's Tral mentioned in her complaint, that her husband Amarjeet Singh, 61, went out from home on 4th of July and did not return. According to a police official, "The situation is no different than the previous years. There has been a steady increase in missing people. In just one week, five people have gone missing and it shows a worrying trend." According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), 4766 persons were reported missing as of 2016 in J&K. Data reveals, "There are at least 4766 persons including children below the age of 18 years that were reported missing in Jammu and Kashmir as of 2016. However, of them, 66.7 percent are still reported missing and only 33.3 percent were recovered till last year." The statistics reveal that of 4766 persons, 1745 including 802 male and 943 females went missing during the year 2016 while the remaining 3021 person including 1685 males and 1336 females were reported missing and untraced from previous years (Before 2016). The data on missing persons includes 1070 missing children below the age of 18 years in J&K and of them, only 354 including 164 males and 190 females were recovered while 716 children including 425 males and 291 females were untraced as of 2016. |
