'Politically connected' officials of Info Deptt misled their bosses

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, July 9: The state run Information department which has been hogging the headlines for all the wrong reasons during the past three and half years was pulled up by the politicians for its wrong policies and its failure to deliver on many occasions during the erstwhile PDP-BJP regime but the politically connected officials did not mend their ways.
"Failure of the Information department to project the ministers and the PDP-BJP government in a proper way had created void between the masses and the rulers and it led to its sudden end," said a source.
He revealed when PDP-BJP coalition ruled the state the officials resorted to "pick and choose method." "These officials only used to hover around the ministers and the politicians who were of use to them and helped them (officials) whenever they were caught in some corruption scandal or any other misadventure. For these officials others did not matter as they were of no use to them," the source alleged.
Attempts of the Information department to control the media backfired. All their bids to crush Early Times didn't materialize. The officials who are still running the department misled their "political bosses" and made them believe that Early Times can be stopped from highlighting the failures of the government by pushing the management and the staff to the edge. But we proved them wrong by remaining firm on our stand. Your newspaper was the only publication in the state which highlighted all the wrongs which were committed during the PDP-BJP regime. Even after the fall of the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir the officials of the Information department have not changed their tactics and are carrying on with their policy of "vendetta." Early Times has been exposing the misdeeds of the Information department and would keep on doing so despite facing the onslaught.
It may be recalled that Chairman J&K Legislative Council, Haji Anayat Ali in January this year pulled Information department for not providing sufficient coverage to the business in the house of elders. The members of the house, raised concerned over ignorance of issues being raised in the house by information department.
"We do not find in Information department's press notes, what we discuss here", resented the members of the house in one voice and urged upon the chair to direct concern authorities to mend its way. The Chairman, JKLC had directed the Director Information provide space, what members say in the house. "Except, Ministers' the department does not provide, space the members, it should reach to public as we are here during session to discuss issue related to public", one of the members had said.
He had said that same practice was seen in the lower house of legislature as most of the issues raised by members did not find place in information department's press notes.
"Most of the times, we find our name, as ……..the members also participated in votes of thanks", the member had said. "We raise very important issues related to public services, but the department meant for dissemination of information creates barriers. How journalists from other than information department, occasionally give us space", the member had said.
Many ministers of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had even complained to the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti that they are not given due coverage and the activities being carried out by them were being ignored. However, the officials, according to the sources, convinced the former Chief Minister to not to pay any heed to them (BJP ministers).
