Police official from the area said that around 10.45 pm on Sunday, three young men, suspected to be militants barged in the house of PDP worker Abdul Majeed Dar S/O Abdul Gaffar Dar of Shahgund Sumbal in Bandipora district. They were looking for Dar, apparently with the intention to kidnap him.
"Dar's wife Shakeela (45) came in between to rescue her husband who was hiding somewhere in the house, and in the meantime the attackers became furious and attacked Shakeela Begum with knives injuring her grievously," said an official.
He said that as the attackers fled, there were efforts to evacuate her to the hospital. "Shakeela was shifted to Hajin hospital where from she was referred to Srinagar.
She had multiple stab wounds. She had serious injuries in her abdomen and neck, and the injured lady was moved in a critical condition to JVC hospital in Bemina where she was declared dead on arrival, said police official.
Police have registered case in PS Hajin and investigations were taken up.
Eyewitness said that Dar was made hostage by militants and he was compelled to open the locker under the trigger of gun, after which he had given them the keys of his daughter Ishrat Majeed 18, to open the locker.
There was no pistol, but there was cash and jewellery, which include Rs 3, 45,000 cash. The other valuables in the locker included a necklace, six gold coins, two small necklaces and five finger rings, said a local resident of Shahgund.
However Dar told reporters, "I tried to seize this moment and I attacked the masked man and tried to catch him by his throat," Dar said. "One of the masked men pulled a knife from his pocket and attacked my wife who first received an injury in her abdomen and later in her throat" he added.
