Waste Management work suffers in Srinagar | SMC halts IEC work in 10 wards | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 20: With an aim of ensuring segregation of waste at source at house hold level, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) had allocated 4 to 5 wards to around half a dozen NGOs in Srinagar several months back for Information Education and Communication (IEC) work but within 3 months of time the work has been halted in at least 10 wards say sources in SMC. Details available with Early Times reveal that Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has halted Information Education and Communication (IEC) work in at least 10 wards of SMC which has created a resentment among the population in these wards of Srinagar city. Around 6 to 7 NGOs who were allotted 4 to 5 wards each are now working in mere 2 wards only, said an officer in SMC. With an aim of streamlining solid waste management work Division Bench of J&K High Court in April this year had directed Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to take mere 10 % of waste to its landfill site, but reliable sources say that even today SMC continues to take 70 % of waste to landfill site and rest of the 30 % of waste is either dumped in water-bodies, open spaces or burnt by the municipal staff / rag pickers. The then Advocate General Jehangir Iqbal Ganai had appeared on behalf of the Government and told the division bench that Housing and Urban Development department has issued several tenders and few works have already been allotted to some bidders in by SMC . The acting Chief Justice S Ramalingam advised the Government during the case hearing that Government must adopt the models of cities where best solid waste management practices are being put into use. Inspite of more than 3 months SMC is not abiding by the HC order of taking mere 10 % of waste to landfill as rest of the waste is to be treated at mohalla or colonies itself. As reported already Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) , Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and all other Municipal Committees and Councils across the state continue to dump 80 to 100 % untreated garbage at their respective dumping sites which is in violation of interim order of J&K High Court division bench which had directed to take only 10 % waste to the landfill sites. |
