Mehbooba faces 'isolation' threat
7/20/2018 11:50:11 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 20: Desperate attempts of the former chief minister and president of the Peoples Democratic Party Mehbooba Mufti to keep her flock together are not yielding any positive results.
Sources told Early Times that close aides of Mehbooba Mufti had advised the former Chief Minister to expel the rebels but she is "indecisive" as expelling them would mean that she would pave the way for her party getting split. "A few neutral leaders in the party are holding negotiations with the six rebel legislators but till now their response has not been positive," they added.
"The rebel faction led by Imran Raza Ansari seems in no mood to listen to anyone and they are claiming that they enjoy the support of more than 15-MLAs," sources added.
One of the PDP rebels Abdul Majeed Padder recently stated that 51 MLAs are ready to form the government and it's just a matter of time when announcement would be made in this regard.
An insider said that the state BJP leaders too are "desperate" and want to return to power. "These BJP MLAs are working overtime to convince the party's central leadership to go for the alliance with the PDP rebels," they added.
A source said that Mehbooba has roped in a PDP's founder leader, who too was sidelined during the Mehbooba's regime, to work out a deal with the rebels and assure them that PDP can again form the government in J&K with the help of Congress and independent legislators. "Mehbooba has got it conveyed to the rebels that they would be given important portfolios and party positions. She knows it very well that if the rebels don't return then it would be difficult for her to cobble up the numbers. The state BJP leaders are aware about this development and they are trying their best to do something," the source added.
He claimed that PDP rebels believe that if they compromise they would be once again "trampled" by the people who are close confidants of the former Chief Minister. "These rebels are maintaining that they are fed up of family rule and they want to get rid of it. Even if the government is not formed the PDP rebel camp is determined to call it off a day and approach the people with the slogan of no family rule," the source added.
An insider said that Mehbooba's attempts are proving futile and her pressure tactics seem to be not working. "She has to keep her MLAs intact to make her party survive," he added.
