NC's pressure tactics working, Congress is yielding? | New administrative units | | Rustam JAMMU, Jan 30: The Congress is digging its political grave in Jammu province with whose support it remained relevant in the state for years and has been enjoying power since November 2002 in alliance with the Kashmiri ruling elite. This is the only conclusion one could draw in the light of the developments which unfolded in New Delhi and Jammu on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is now almost clear from the yesterday's developments that the National Conference (NC) would carry the day and the Congress would toe the line of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who wants the Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) for the creation of new administrative units to make recommendations on the lines indicated in the highly biased and irrational report of Mushtaq Ganai. Established in 2010 by the Omar Abdulah Government, the Ganai panel recommended more than 900 new administrative units without interacting with the people. Omar Abdullah wants these recommendations to be implemented so that the "unpopular and failed" NC could restore some of the lost political space in the Valley. Firm as he was and is, Omar Abdullah last week candidly told the CSC, which is headed by senior Congress leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, that it must submit its report latest by January 31 failing which he could sacrifice the Government and he would not hold any Cabinet meeting. That his threat has worked could be seen from the complete U-turn the Congress took the other day after NC president and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah made AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to intervene to save the coalition Government. On Wednesday, Ambika Soni, in-charge Jammu and Kashmir, gave everyone to understand that the Congress and the NC were on the same page as far as the issue of new administrative units is concerned, as the Congress also stood for more administrative units, and that Tara Chand would submit his report on time and the State Cabinet would meet on February 1 to discuss both the reports - Ganai report and CSC report. Tara Chand also said on Wednesday that the report would be submitted on the D-day, notwithstanding the fact that there are elements in the local Congress who are vehemently opposed to the pressure tactics Omar Abdullah has been adopting to browbeat and blackmail the Congress to further his political agenda in the Valley without any regard to the interests of the Congress party in Jammu province. Of course, there are reports that the Congress could demand 2,500 new administrative units to counter the NC and the Mushtaq Ahmed Ganai panel report, but it is extremely unlikely that it would succeed because the Congress high command comprising Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are all out to destroy the Congress across the nation, including Jammu and Kashmir. To be more precise, the Congress high command will make the local Congress leadership fall in line and go by what the NC says. Indeed, the Congress is in a self-destruction mode. |
