Traffic jam causes chaos on National Highway | | | Sarita Jamwal
Udhampur, Sept 30: Chaotic traffic on Srinagar - Jammu highway allegedly due to failure of traffic police to regulate vehicular movement has plugged the 300 km artery road from all sides, on Tuesday affecting the much needed supplies to flood hit Kashmir. According to reports due to chronic jams hundreds of vehicles, including goods carriers remain stranded along the road right from Udhampur upto Banihal. The commuters and drivers alleged that main cause behind the mess created by traffic authorities who failed to enforce the traffic movement schedule and the vehicles are allowed simultaneously from both sides while cops alleged nomads and drivers responsible for problem as they s don't follow the norms Reports said that from Banihal to Tikri almost 150 km area remain under the grip of heavy jamming and Vehicles were moving at snail pace throughout day. Reports added that hundreds of vehicles which left Jammu this morning were caught up in long traffic snarls at different places along the highway. Hundreds of passenger and goods carrier vehicles from either side of highway and those from Chenab Valley districts were caught in the jams till late in the evening .Long Traffic Jams between Ramsu and Tikri had disrupted the traffic movement on the highway for about twenty four hours giving a tough time to the commuters. "I left Jammu at around 9:30 am in the morning but I am still caught up in Rehmabal in Udhampur till 4:00Pm , It was a total mismanagement on part of traffic sleuths added Raj Kumar a businessman. Despite announcing the one way traffic on the road the traffic officials allowed hundreds of vehicles from also other side which led to chaos. Majority of passengers who started their journey on Monday remained stranded after 8 pm yesterday and they spent the night inside vehicles, heaved a sigh of relief late in the evening today when jam was cleared.. However, the traffic authorities blame the dilapidated condition of the road and movement of heavy vehicles from either side with supplies from Jammu and Fruit from Valley side. They also said that the movement of nomads moving from upper reaches to plains was also disrupting the movement of the traffic. They said that the major bottleneck was one-way traffic at Gangroo near Ramsu and over a dozen other places where the supplies vehicles move at snail's pace. He said that the movement of Nomads was also creating problem and trigger long jams. However, they said that the traffic schedule was being properly followed and no vehicle is allowed to cross Jawahar Tunnel after the cutoff time. |
