Sports Council authorities allotting MA stadium for non sporting activities | Will HC directions on Parade Ground deter arbitrariness? | | Shiv Dev Thakur JAMMU, Sept 30: On the hind side of the direction of the State High Court not to use Parade Ground for any other purpose except sports activities that was delivered today, MA stadium, the main sporting centre of Jammu has been lent out to non sporting activities twice in a week, jeopardizing entire sporting activity conducted in it. Resentment is brewing amongst the players and their parents towards cold indifference of the authorities, especially the Joint Secretary of the State Sports Council and the Sports Officer Jammu Rajan Sharma who have been instrumental in making such allotments. "For petty sums of money, these officers have been allotting MA Stadium for religious and non sporting functions in utter disregard of the trainees who undergo regular training here," said a parent, who accompanies his son for cricket training. "First it was Chhari Yatra on first Navratra and then a two day function of a Godman for which the track and field of the main stadium was dug out irresponsibly, ruling out any sporting activity for several days to come," he added. The Indoor complex of the MA stadium which has been under repair and renovation since long has marred the training of Gymnasts and Badminton players for months and several celebrated players are seen doing whatever little workout is possible inside the dusty park opposite the indoor complex or the Table Tennis hall. "Many a budding players who had starting performing have given up even before they could start their sporting careers due to apathetical attitude of the Council authorities," said a senior player pleading anonymity. However, there is a silver lining to the arbitrariness and unaccountability of the Council authorities. "One good thing has happened during these days; the MA stadium which had turned into a huge garbage dump witnessed some cleanliness. Heaps of garbage lying all around the stadium for months were finally removed ahead of these religious functions," said a senior doctor who comes to MA stadium for evening jogs. Meanwhile, sporting community is buoyant over the direction of the Division Bench of the State High Court prohibiting use of Parade Ground for non sporting activities and is hoping that the directions of the Court are extended to the MA stadium also, which Council authorities have turned into their personal domain. |
