As Pancheri, Moungri limp to normalcy, winter demon knocks at doors

JAMMU, Sept 30: The life in rain and landslide hit areas of Pancheri and Mongri tehsils in Udhampur district is slowly but steadily limping back to normalcy but hundreds of affected families in the entire belt who were rendered homeless are up against another challenge of coping up with the fast approaching winter season.
After facing the wrath of nature on September 6 and 7, several affected families in the entire belt of Pancheri and Mongri tehsils, who either lost their houses completely or partially, have no other option but to put up in tents and make shift places
The marooned people, however, are getting anxious with each passing moment as the winters are not too far and presently they are spending days and nights in open with no immediate hope of moving back to their residences.
The affected people have no clue as to when would they get compensation from the Government for reconstructing their houses and when would they be able to get back a permanent roof.
"People, who were rendered homeless in the entire region, have braved nature's wrath with grit and determination but presently they are under immense pressure as winter season is round the corner and first snowfall of the season is also not far away," Sarpanch Panchayat Basnote (Mongri) Kailash Devi told Early Times.
"The affected families who have been accommodated in tents are getting restless with each passing day as they know that there is no immediate respite from the present situation…. The people continuously ponder over on what would be their fate in winter weather and how would they live in open in cold climatic condition," she added.
It is worthwhile to mention her that village Saddal in Panchayat Panjar of newly created Tehsil Mongri was worst hit by the catastrophe on September 6 as a massive landslide claimed about 40 lives and damage to property there but the other panchayats in the rough terrain of Pancheri and Mongri too could not escape nature's fury as devastation is quite visible in these areas.
Several villages other than Saddal including Galiote, Badota and Sadota in Tehsil Pancheri and Kalsote, Gunsar, Prand, Damnote, Basnote, Gadsari and Dubbigali in Tehsil Mongri also experienced landslides which destroyed several houses but these areas could be described as somewhat fortunate as no loss of human life was reported there.
The extent of damages in these areas was mainly limited to house collapse - partial as well as full, perishing of cultivable land, destruction of crops where fertile land remained safe and loss of lives of livestock.
