Shopkeepers replace old structures with concrete ones, SMC in slumber | Blessing in disguise | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, Sept 30: The devastation caused by recent floods has proved blessing in disguise for some shopkeepers. They are replacing old structures with concrete ones as Srinagar municipality watches helplessly. Pertinently encroachment of roads, drains, footpaths and water bodies has been described as one of the reasons of the worst ever floods that rocked Jammu Kashmir recently. The authorities, according to environmentalists, should have been alert this time to prevent such acts. It was learnt that after water receded some opportunists in Regal Chowk, Natipora, at many places people were seen replacing their old structures with concrete ones. "A relative of mine living in Natipora area had a shop adjacent to his house and concerned authorities were not allowing him to renovate it but it was damaged in flood and now he is replacing it with a concrete structure," said a resident. Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Police wings and volunteer organizations are busy in cleaning and fumigation, opportunists taking advantage of busy schedule of SMC and police amid worry of common masses hit by floods to widen the size of their shops and replace the temporary ones with concrete ones. One respectable citizen of Jawahar Nagar said that there are many illegal structures which people have erected over the years and though many of them are even inside the flood channels besides many government offices were constructed near these channels, resulting in leaving a little room for water to discharge from the area, but unfortunately government is sleeping over the issue. The matter of illegal constructions in and around city was raised in a press conference addressed by the Chief Secretary, Muhammad Iqbal Khanday on 8/29/2014 who promised action against all such people also but of no use so far. |
