Focus on issues of governance, not on emotive issues | Baig’s lament | | Rustam
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 3: Senior PDP leader, MP Lok Sabha and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzzaffar Hussain Baig is not happy over what happened after the oath taking ceremony or after the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition government on March 1. He has said that it would have been better and in the larger interest of the people of the state, had the coalition partner refrained from making controversial statements or raking up emotive issues Obviously, he hinted at the statements like Pakistan, Hurriyat and militants created atmosphere conducive for the peaceful conduct of the assembly elections, return the mortal remains of Afzal Guru, who was hanged on February 9, 2013 within the premises of Tihar Jail, Delhi, and on Monday Lok Sabha statement of Home Minister Rajnath Singh that the BJP-led NDA Government and the BJP completely dissociated themselves from the statement that it was Pakistan, Hurriyat leadership and militants, and not the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, people of the state and the Election Commission of India, enabled the people of the state to participate in the assembly elections in great numbers. How else should one describe his statement which read like this: “In the last 24 hours, some statements on both sides (PDP-BJP) have created confusion…He would have preferred a clear cut statement on the part of the two parties in their Common Minimum Programme (CMP) about talks with Pakistan, Hurriyat Conference and revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act…It is not a promising beginning but I am still hopeful” that things would move in the right direction. Baig has, in fact, urged both the parties to focus on issues of governance and said, “Let people decide whether the clauses in CMP on these issues are clear cut or whether they are capable of two different meanings, one that suits BJP and another that suits PDP. I would have preferred a clear cut statement and more clarity on these issues…Coalition should be based on a good faith agreement and not on compromise”. It is hoped that the PDP-led coalition government would avoid controversial issues and focus on issues of governance. There are many problems facing the people of the state and there is the issue of regional imbalance. The people across the state have specific problems and these problems can be tackled only if the controversial issues are avoided. Confrontation would only create political instability in the state, add to the problems of the already suffering people and give an opportunity to the parties like the NC and the Congress fish in the troubled waters. Some observers have already expressed the view that the confrontation between the coalition partners could even lead to fresh elections. The best way for the coalition government obviously is to focus on issues of sovereignty, peace, development, governance and regional balance. Such an approach alone would help the state and its people and keep under check fissiparous tendencies. |
