Kishtwar- A beneficiary of disproportionate political representation? | | | Kunal Shrivatsa Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 3: In the backdrop of a new dispensation is taking reins in the state, there are many regions and communities which are still deprived of proportionate political representation; but there are others which are over represented and Kishtwar region is one of them. Incredibly, the Kishtwar district which has two Assembly constituencies viz Kishtwar and Inderwal, got its fourth elected representative in the form of National Conference (NC) leader and former Minister Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, who was elected as Member Legislative Council (MLC) yesterday. It may be recalled that the voters of Kishtwar Assembly constituency had elected Sunil Kumar Sharma of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) who edged past his nearest rival Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo of the NC by 2852 votes in a triangular contest wherein Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) candidate also got a substantial number of votes and stood third in the poll battle. Sharma of BJP polled 28054 votes while his opponent from the NC Kichloo bagged 25202 votes. Apart from Sunil Kumar Sharma, who won from Kishtwar Assembly segment, the winner from Inderwal Assembly constituency, the second seat of the district, was Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, who romped home with a comfortable margin over his nearest rival from the BJP. So, on the day of declaration of results on December 23, two leaders from BJP and Congress got elected to the Lower House of the State Legislature. On February 21, the Kishtwar district got another legislator and this time it was the turn of PDP's Firdous Ahmad Tak, who elected unopposed as member of the State Legislative Council. With NC leader Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo's entry into the Upper House of the State Legislature, the Kishtwar district has now elected representatives of all the major political parties in the state including that of Congress, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP. The bounty for the people of Kishtwar doesn't ends here as they had amore bigger surprise as one of the legislators from the district Sunil Kumar Sharma of the BJP got inducted into the State Council of Ministers with a Minister of State rank. The ministerial berth for Sharma was nothing less than an icing on the cake for the people of Kishtwar who could not have asked for more than that. Besides, these four legislators from Kishtwar district, there are two more elected representatives in the present State Legislature, who are son of the soil. BJP's Member Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Raipur-Domana constituency in Jammu district and now a cabinet Minister, Bali Bhagat hails from Kuleeth, Kishtwar while another BJP MLA from Doda constituency Shakti Parihar's ancestral village is Salana Saroor in Kishtwar district. With as many as six legislators having Kishtwar origin in both the Houses of the State Legislature, it remains to be seen that how much impetus developmental activities get in the mountainous district. |
