Time to isolate, expose Hurriyat leaders | Two-nation theory of Jinnah | | Neha ET Report JAMMU, Mar 3: The Hurriyat Conference of Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday has crossed all the redlines and openly said that the Kashmiri Muslims didn't reject the two-nation theory of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, which led to the creation of Pakistan on the basis of religion. "India only with the help of its military might has occupied the State of Jammu & Kashmir and as far as the accession (of the state with India) is concerned, it is the same agreement like the agreement of Amritsar of 1846 when the Britishers sold the entire population of Jammu & Kashmir to Gulab Singh without knowing the wishes of its people. In 1947 too, only an individual expressed his wish to accede the state to India and he too did not bother about the consent of the people of the state. The people of the state are continuing their struggle for their right of self-determination so that they can announce their decision about their future," the Hurriyat Conference (Geelani) said while reacting to the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's March 1 statement that the Kashmiris had rejected the two-nation theory of Jinnah. In fact, the Hurriyat Conference of Geelani termed as "huge and Himalayan lie" the statement of Mufti. The statement of the Hurriyat Conference was not just provocative, anti-India and pro-Pakistan but it was also nothing but an attempt to mislead the Muslims of Kashmir. The statement that "as far as the accession (of the state with India) is concerned, it is the same agreement like the agreement of Amritsar of 1846 when the Britishers sold the entire population of Jammu & Kashmir to Gulab Singh without knowing the wishes of its people" was not based on facts. The fact is that in March 1846 Raja of Jammu Gulab Singh and the British Indian Government signed the Treaty of Amritsar under which Kashmir became part of the Dogra Kingdom comprising Jammu province and the entire Ladakh region. Commenting on the Treaty of Amritsar, the then Kashmiri leadership and later on the likes of Sheikh Abdullah had said that the British Government sold the life, honour and dignity of Kashmiri Muslims to the Dogras of Jammu for Rs 75 lakh and had demanded that the Treaty be cancelled so that Kashmir became independent of the Dogra Kingdom. As for the statement that "in 1947 too, only an individual (in this case Maharaja Hari Singh) expressed his wish to accede the state to India and he too did not bother about the consent of the people of the state", it needs to be underlined that under the Indian Independence act of 1947 the Maharaja of the state, like other princes, alone had the power to take a decision on the political future of his state. He took the decision following the Pakistani aggression in the state and his decision was as per the law on the subject. Very significantly, his decision was ratified by the Kashmiri-dominated Jammu & Kashmir Constituent Assembly after 1951, when Sheikh Abdullah, the votary of Switzerland-type Independent Kashmir, was the Wazir-e-Azam of the state. Anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh Sheikh was imposed on the state by Prime Minister Nehru against the will of the people of Jammu province and Ladak region. The statement of the Hurriyat Conference also said that the "people of the state are continuing their struggle for their right of self-determination so that they can announce their decision about their future". Which people it referred to? The people of Jammu province are not struggling for the right to self-determination. Nor do the people of Ladakh stand for the right to self-determination. On the contrary, they have been struggling for their full integration into India and for a dispensation that is independent of Kashmir and within India and under the Indian Constitution. The recent election results established once and for all that Jammu and Ladakh are for the national mainstream and they have nothing to do with those in Kashmir who have been indulging in communal and anti-national activities. The fact of the matter is that only a handful of Kashmiri Muslims believe in and advocate the pernicious two-nation theory of Jinnah and they cannot be allowed to determine the fate of the vast nationalist constituency in the state. Now that the Geelani's Hurriyat Conference has crossed the redlines, it's time for the authorities in the state to act against its leadership. These Hurriyat leaders have already caused enough of damage to the polity and society. They need to be brought to justice at the earliest so that the state is cleansed of all undesirable elements. Action against the rogues like Geelani would be in their interest, as it will help them restore a lasting peace in the Valley. |
