Where is Ahad Jan- famous shoe thrower? | | |
Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 3: On August 15, 2010, a suspended Police Head Constable Abdul Ahad Jan of north Kashmir hurled a shoe at the then Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the flag-hoisting ceremony on the occasion of Independence Day. As the new government in Jammu and Kashmir has established itself over the political landscape of the state, Kashmir's streets, all of a sudden, got abuzz over the tales of Ahad Jan with people asking about his whereabouts. After the shoe attack, there is no news about that man and many believe that he would have been coerced by the government not to speak again. Meanwhile, people here after the formation of the non- NC government in the state ask that whether that shoe attack by Ahad Jan was a misplaced anger against the system...or a tacit conspiracy of silence? "Omar has joined the elite club of world leaders targeted with shoes," said Farooq Abdullah, father and then Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Minister after the shoe attack. Police at that time had said that Ahad Jan is mentally unsound. However residents of his village contradicted the version saying, he is anything but not insane. "The security is very tight in the flag-hoisting venue where top police officers and VIPs are seated. How could a mentally-retarded reach there? He is a responsible citizen," said Bashir Ahmad, resident of Ajis village in north Kashmir. In 1992, Ahad Jan had rescued a former Director General of Police from a site where a bomb blast had occurred . But the promise of an out-of-turn promotion was never fulfilled. On the contrary, his routine promotion was held back. The shoe flung by Jan missed the target but an unfazed Omar referred to the incident in his speech and said "It is the best way to protest. It is better to raise slogans and hurl shoes but avoid stone pelting." As many as 15 policemen were suspended pending inquiry after the incident. Jan had told the court earlier that he was beaten and said he was unable to move his hand. But what wasn't clear is whether he sustained injuries in the beating right after the shoe throwing incident or was he tortured during interrogation. The "suspended" Head Constable Abdul Ahad Jan of Bandipore, had thrown a brown leather shoe at Omar, which missed hitting the Chief Minister. The shoe thrower was rounded up by security men and taken out of the Stadium. As a matter of shoeing, throwing shoes, showing the sole of one's shoe or using shoes to insult are forms of protest primarily associated with the Arab world. Shoeing received the attention after an Iraqi journalist, Muntadhar al-Zaidi threw his shoe at then American President George Bush on December 14, 2008 at a press conference in Baghdad, Iraq. In the same month in 2010, on Aug 8, a man threw both his shoes at Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari when he was addressing a public meeting in Birmingham. The shoes landed just short of him. Zardari was criticized for visiting Britain while there were floods in his country. He was in the middle of his speech when an elderly man hurled both shoes at him. An unidentified man was later taken away from the meeting by police and security officials. |
