It is no more about Abdullahs’, Muftis' | 25 present legislators are related to each other | | Bashir Assad Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 8: In recent past, people in Jammu and Kashmir would talk about the dynastic politics and promotion of family fiefdom by New Delhi. The times are changing fast and one would come across fiefs all around. However, in electoral democracy, it is actually the voters who approve or disapprove such practices. In the recently held elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference, the PDP and the Congress not only promoted the dynastic politics but NC and Congress virtually took refuge in some influential and politically powerful families and the trick even worked for them. There are more than 25 sitting MLAs who are related to each other and interestingly one single family has created a history of sorts. The family of the veteran Gujjar leader who is being held in high esteem across the political divide has emerged as one of the most powerful families in the country. Mian Altaf Ahmad, son of the most respected spiritual leader of the times is holding the legacy of representing the Gujjar community and the recent elections have empowered this family even more than Abdullah's and Mufti's. Where these elections reduced Abdullah's to 1 MLA, the Mians emerged stronger on the political horizon of the state. Not only here, this family has roots on the other side of the LoC and Shoukat Ali Shah the nephew of Mian Altaf is sitting MLA in the Muzafferabad Assembly. Shah was a minister in the former regime there. Mufti were compensated for the loss of Devsar seat earlier held by brother-in-law of the chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed by the Dooru seat now represented by Farooq Ahmad Andrabi brother-in-law of Mufti. However, Mians' not only retained the Kangan seat but got two more and interestingly having equal voice in NC, Congress and BJP. However, there are other influential families which have emerged even more powerful in the recently held elections. 25 sitting legislators are close relatives of each other. The relations are across the lower house of the state legislature. These exclude the four of the six recently elected parliament members who have close relatives in the state assembly. Besides, there are three members in the house who are relatives of former members or ministers. And then 18 individuals have close relations with each other. The more interesting thing is that if all those relatives of these influential families would have won then 51 out of 87 members would have been closely related to each other. After Muzaffar Hussain Beig, former Deputy Chief Minister, was elected to Lok Sabha, it was his nephew Javed Beig who was elected from Baramulla, retaining power for the family. Another PDP leader and MP who defeated Dr. Farooq Abdullah in the parliamentary elections has retained the power in the state through her sister-in-law Asiya Naqash who is minister of state in the Mufti led council of ministers. Likewise Aijaz Ahmad Khan son of another veteran Gujjar leader Haji Bulland Khan not only retained his Gool Arnas seat but his younger brother Mumtaz won from Gulabgarh. Choudhary Zulfiqar Ali, minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution System of PDP is brother-in-law of Aijaz and Mumtaz. Srinagar's Ansaris' are the new addition. Business tycoon and cleric Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari died in 2014 summer after prolonged illness. While his well-read son Imran won from Pattan on PDP ticket and is a cabinet minister now, Abid Hussain Ansari brother of the deceased Moulvi won the Zadibal seat. Similarly Yawar Dilawar Mir who won the election from Rafiabad constituency is son of the senior PDP leader and former minister Dilawar Mir and son-in-law of the minister for R&B, Sayed Altaf Bukhari. |
