And now, demand for return of mortal remains of Guru | Impact of Alam's release | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 8: While the controversial release of terrorist and president of Muslim League Masrat Alam Bhat has angered the people across the country as well as an ally of the BJP, the Shiv Sena, and youth wing of the BJP in J&K, it has been hailed by Kashmiri separatists as a great victory and step that would further help them achieve their anti-India goal. Masarat, 42, was arrested and rearrested under Public Safety Act 17 times since 2010. Alam was arrested at his maternal uncle's house in Wagund Telbal area of Srinagar on October 18, 2010, amid 2010 summer unrest. The Shiv Sena and youth wing of the BJP have termed the release of Alam as a "threat to national security" and registered a strong protest against the government decision. Significantly, even the Congress has denounced the state government for its decision on Alam. Questioning the decision of the coalition government to release Alam the Congress asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajanth Singh and RSS to clarify their stand on release of Alam. "The Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, RSS besides MoS in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, who belongs to Jammu region, should clarify their stand on the Masarat issue," JKPCC spokesman and MLC Ravinder Sharma told reporters in Jammu, adding that "We question the decision of the Mufti Sayeed government, of whose BJP is coalition partner... where is BJP gone. It seems BJP has gone in coma or they are on ventilator after becoming part of the government". The NPP leader Bhim Singh too has questioned the decision and urged state governor NN Vohra to use powers vested in him under section 92 of the state constitution and dissolve the assembly. Very significantly, a senior police official, who has worked in Kashmir for years, also has expressed concern over the decision on the condition of anonymity. "It will be great security risk and threat to the peace in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly Kashmir Valley, where he has triggered two major stone pelting agitations in which large number persons lost lives in valley…Alam is the mastermind of the 2008 and 2010 unrest in Kashmir Valley in which a number of lives were lost during the stone-pelting agitation. He is more stronger and powerful leader than Syed Ali Shah Geelani and has huge cadres in stone-pelters and youth," he reportedly said while reflecting on the release of Alam. Another police official expressed an identical view on the condition of anonymity and reportedly said that "the blunder is repeated by this government again". As for Kashmiri separatists, they have all hailed the release of Alam. They have not only welcomed his release but also demanded release of all the anti-India elements lodged in various jails in and outside the state and return of the mortal remains of Afzal Guru, who was convicted in the 2001 Parliament terror attack case and handed in the Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013 as per the Supreme Court judgment. "If his (Mufti Muhammad Sayeed's) intentions are clear, he should release Muhammad Qasim Faktoo. He should also bring the mortal remains of Muhammad Afzal Guru to his native place," APHC-M spokesman Shahid-ul-Islam said soon after the controversial release of Alam. Jammu & Kashmir National Front chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan, chief of Dukhtaran-e-Milat Syeda Asiya Andrabi, Democratic Freedom Party chairman and Hurriyat Conference (JK) leader Shabir Ahmad Shah, to mention only a few, also expressed similar views and not just demanded release of all the anti-nationals booked under various charges, but also asked the state government to return the mortal remains of Guru to his family members. They said all those who were put behind the bars had committed no crime and that they were wrongly framed or booked under frivolous charges. All this indicates that while the release of Alam has evoked a strong reaction in the country, it has emboldened Kashmiri separatists. His release does not augur well for the security of the state and the country as a whole. |
