Heavy snowfall compounds problems for stranded people of far flung areas of Kupwara

KUPWARA, Mar 8: Fresh snowfall has crippled the whole life not only in plains, but on higher reaches too.
Reports said that around 300 people including women and children are stranded in the Kupwara town and other places of the district. At the same time people belong from border areas like Tangdhar, Machil, Keran and Karnah have appealed the government for airlifting to the respective places.
Sources said that for the last two weeks the people belong from border areas like Tangdhar, Machil, Keran, Karnah, Chowkibal and other adjacent areas are stranded here in Kupwara town. As the road leading to the areas from Kupwara town has been closed due to landslides hundreds of residents of these places at stranded at various places in Kupwara.
"Not only general public but the patients who were referred from Karnah to Kupwara and Srinagar are stranded in Kupwara as Sadhna top has been temporarily closed due to heavy snowfall from last couple of days," said sources while sharing information with Early Times.
A local resident of Tangdhar Nazir Ahmad Khan stranded at Kupwara said that five feet of Snow was recorded in Tangdhar, Keran and Karnah area on Sunday evening. He said that Sadhna top and other adjacent areas received 4 feet of snow till the reports last came in.
"Fresh snowfall paralyzed normal life on Sunday. Due to slippery roads passenger vehicles, including Tata Sumo and other motorable vehicles were not allowed to ply on these roads throughout the day," said Khan.
He said that he is stranded in the Kupwara town since 12 days as Kupwara-Tangdhar road has been closed due to landslides and slippery roads at various places. He said the stranded people are facing numerous difficulties adding that they don't have anything to eat or wear.
A senior government official has said that on Kupwara-Tangdhar road around five feet fresh snow has accumulated. The official said that due to heavy snowfall on higher reaches men and machinery could not be pressed into service. He said most probably on Monday morning men and snow cutter machines would be pressed into service, so that stranded passengers are allowed to move to their respective places.
Early Times has learnt from authoritative sources that the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued advisory in avalanche prone areas across the north Kashmir like Tangdhar, Machil, Chowkibal, Keran, Karma Rajwar and Trehgam. Advisory has been also issued in other two districts of North Kashmir, Vis a Vis in Baramulla and Bandipora, like Nilsar Kandi, Hajibal, Tangmarg and in Bandipora district.
It has been learnt that district administration including Army and Jammu and Kashmir police have provided tea, snacks and other items including first aid medicine to the stranded passengers.
