| For Mufti it is question of perform or perish | | |
There is no scope for Chief Minister,Mufti Mohd.Sayeed,to trigger one controversy or the other because if people have voted for change they do expect a Government that believes in governance.A Government,people want,that could resolve various problems being faced by people in Jammu and Kashmir.Poor governance,provided by the NC-Congress ruling coalition during the last six years,had added to the difficulties and problems of people of the state who had to face var ied problems on account of Pakistan sponsored war against India.Well if the Mufti is blamed for giving credit to Pakistan,separatists and militants for ensuring peace poll process in Jammu and Kashmir instead to people of the state,security forces and the Election Commission it is understandable.At the same time one should give credit to him for having caused fresh differences between the moderates and the hardliners among the separatists.While Syed Ali Shah Geelani,who leads a conglomerate of hardliners,has ridiculed Chief Minister Mufti Mohd.Sayeed's attempt at giving credit to Pakistan and separatists for ensuing high polling percentage,his political opponent,Molvi Umar Farooq,who heads a conglomerate of moderates among the separatists,has appreciated Mufti Sayeed for having credited Pakistan,and separatists for peaceful poll process.The division in the two camps is quite clear.
However,there are critics,especially from the organizations that are rival to the PDP,who have not relished Chief Minister,Mufti Sayeed's direction to the Director General police for releasing those political detainees against whom there were no criminal charges framed.Well on the face of it Mufti Sayeed's direction to the police chief does not warrant criticism because if for minor offenses political activists have been languishing in jails they need to be freed because for whatever minor offenses they had committed they have paid the price by having had to remain within the confines of the jails in the state.But to begin with the decision of the Mufti to set free Masarat Alam has invited great displeasure even from the alliance partner,the BJP.0Yes,the Mufti could have invited deep displeasure and criticism had he issued a blanket inst ructions to the police chief to set free all the political detainees.He has not done so and hence his instructions need to be weighed against the perils of the PDP patron in his forging an alliance with the BJP.If reports from various parts of the valley,which is the real vote bank for the PDP,are relied upon Mufti Mohd.Sayeed's honeymoon with the BJP has attracted criticism and displeasure in Kashmir.It is but natural for people in the valley who,over the years,have been fed with imaginary tales which have instilled fear in their minds against the BJP.In fact the people in Kashmir have been indoctrinated by the political lead ers in such a way as they feel scared of the BJP.When it was the Jana Sangh many uneducated people in the valley would feel scared of what they used to call "Jam Sanghi."
Hence the Mufti had to issue inst ructions to the police Chief to release those political activists against whom criminal cases have not been filed.This means that the Mufti is opposed to jailing innocent people who had been detained during the previous Congress-NC regime for unspecified minor offenses.This way Mufti Sayeed believes he could regain whatever ground he has lost soon after forging an alliance with the BJP for sharing power in Jammu and Kashmir. Was the decision to release hardliner like Masarat Alam only way for the Mufti to make up for the loss of his political weight.Well whatever controversy the Chief Minister has kicked up let him deviate from this path because people have stopped to bank on slogans,on controversies,on false promises.People want liberation from unemployment,poverty,energy crisis,good road connectivity,adequate investment in the sectors of industry and agriculture so that peoples' dependence on heavy import of foodgrains and other consumer items from rest of the country was reduced.And one thing is sure.If Mufti Mohd.Sayeed is able to resolve the problem of unemployment and energy crisis he could easily make up for the loss he has suffereed on account of the PDP's alliance with the BJP.Let various other problems of people are tackled so that people are able to lead a comfortable and safe living.Let people feel that the PDP-BJP ruling coalition has waged a war against corruption and misrule.Let there be justice for the poor and the needy.Let the Mujfti ensure that there was visible progress in the sectors of health,education,social welfare and public distribution of foodgrains.If the BJP leadership belives the Mufti will follow the Sangh guidelines it is wrong because the PDP leadership is not prepared to sing a swan song for the the 19-year old party that had defeated the 77-year old National Conference in the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections.The only mantra for the Mufti is to perform or perish. |
