Srinagar, Mar 8 : As the government has issued strict instruction to the Power Development Department (PDD) to ensure hassle free power to the metered areas of the state, official apathy is marring the people of Zadibal wherein non-metered supply is being provided despite the meters installed five years earlier. Sources told the Early Times that the Zadibal constituency of Srinagar- particularly the area of Lal Bazar is fully metered but the PDD has denied the power supply to it.
Locals while raising pitch against the inaction by the state dispensation stated that the step motherly treatment was given to Lal Bazar only because it didn't vote for the national conference during the previous elections. "The former MLA deliberately denied metered supply to us despite the power meters installed in the area from the last five years. It was the political vendetta as we didn't vote for NC. We approached the PDD authorities time and again with written pleas but no heed was given. Peer Afaq the former MLA also acted as a spoilsport and didn't even help us," says Ghulam Nabi, a local resident of Lal Bazar.
Others seconded his views, saying such an approach has made the entire area to suffer. "We may the bills as per the meter but the power supplied is like in the non- metered areas. This is a cruel injustice accorded to this area. We have lost all hopes in the system," says Bilal Parvez, another local. Residents said that they complied with the government order and didn't halt the installation of the meters in a hope that they will witness the metered power supplies. As per the government rules, power supplied in metered areas will be hassle free but the locals said that the power supplied to them is like that of the non- metered areas. "This is the clear violation of the rules done by the none other than PDD. The new government must take a serious measure over the issue and should end our plight at an earliest," local told this newspaper. Meanwhile, when contacted, PDP senior leader and MLA Zadibal Abid Ansari told Early Times that he has raised the issue of metered supplies to Lal Bazar with the PDD authorities but 'they seem to be in no mood to give power supplies to locals as per rules'. "This is violation of the norms and rules. It is unfortunate and I will continue to strive for the people over the issue as much as I can."
The local MLA stated further that the problem is partly political and partly administrative. "The previous MLA was of national conference. He didn't get any votes in 2008 from Lal Bazar and hence didn't take any measure so that the issue of power could get resolved. It is also the administrative lapse as the PDD in a deliberate attempt made people of Lal Bazar suffer despite the installation of meters," Abid Ansari said.
