Kavinder doesn't know what he is doing | Speaker a non-political office | | Early Times Report jammu, May 20: Speaker is a non-political constitutional office. He/she does contest election on a party ticket, but the moment he/she is elected to this important constitutional position, he/she ceases to be a political person or a party's man/woman, as his/her role is to conduct the business in the Assembly/Lok Sabha taking all the political parties on board. The Speaker has to be impartial and the Speaker is constitutionally bound to not indulge in any political activity. But Jammu & Kashmir is a different type of state. Here the Speaker invariably indulges in political activities and behaves like a rank party man. Akbar Lone, who had won the election in 2008 on the NC ticket, indulged in political activities and sought to promote the NC's interests even though he held the office of the Speaker. Kavinder Gupta, who contested the Assembly election on the BJP ticket and won the election from the Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency, has also been indulging in political activities ever since March 18, when he was unanimously elected as Speaker of the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly. All the political parties supported his candidature for the office of Speaker. Only the other day, Speaker Kavinder Gupta declared in Jammu that the AIIMS will also be established in Jammu. "We have taken up the issue with the BJP high command. We have apprised the central leadership regarding hopes of the people of Jammu from the central government. I can tell you that next year AIIMS will also be established in Jammu," he said. Significantly, he didn't own the statement of the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that the AIIMS would be established in Kashmir. He said, "he would neither contradict his statement nor support him over his assertion". Speaker Kavinder Gupta would do well to leave the political affairs to the care of the BJP. Let the BJP handle the political issues and face public ire for its acts of omission and commission. He would do justice to the Chair he holds by conducting himself in a non-partisan manner. It is his duty to maintain the dignity of the Chair. |
