Following 'insult' flood affected people demand action against Dr Nirmal Singh | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times report SRINAGAR, June 10: Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh the other day virtually insulted the flood affected people of the state when he said that more than due compensation has been given to them and very little more needs to be done. The people who suffered huge losses in the September 2014 flood are quite aghast over the statement of deputy Chief Minister. They demand that chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed should take action against Dr. Nirmal so that he does not issue such disturbing statements in the future. "Both the central and state governments have failed to come up to the expectations of flood affected people. The statement of deputy chief minister has added insult to the injury and he needs to be taken to task. This is a serious issue but the deputy chief minister seems to be too non-serious about the same," said Ali Mohammad, a resident of Sanat Nagar. People in general and more so the flood affected people are quite worried over the tardy distribution of relief cheques. The people say that it would take years for the government to compensate the flood affected people to some extent. "The high command of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) should take a strong notice of utterance of deputy chief minister over the damages caused by the devastating flood. Prime Minister, Narinder Modi should also take a strong note of the statement and recommend stern action against his man who is the deputy chief minister of the state," said Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Jawahar Nagar. It would be in place to mention here that deputy chief minister while addressing a press conference at Jammu on Monday(June 8) had said that the total losses caused due to September 2014 flood is estimated at Rs. 3700 crores. He had further said that Rs. 1500 crores more are needed to compensate the losses suffered due to the flood. "The business community has pegged the loss at Rs. 1, 00,000 crores while as the previous state government had projected the losses to be Rs. 44,000 crores. The World Bank had said that losses suffered due to the flood were to the tune of Rs. 21,000 crores. One fails to understand where from the deputy chief minister got the figures which he has projected as total losses suffered due to the flood," said Mohammad Shaban, a resident of Kursoo Rajbagh. Dr. Nirmal's statement had drawn sharp criticism not only from the opposition parties but also from his colleague in the cabinet, Syed Altaf Bukhari of Peoples Democratic Party. Bukhari had asked the deputy chief minister to stop issuing statements that would hurt the sentiments of people more so those who were affected by the flood last year. |
