Bullet, blood scared people | Clashes break out after another ex-militant shot dead in Sopore town | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq

BARAMULLA, June 15: Militants shot dead another former militant in Mundaji area of Sopore town in Baramulla district of Kashmir on Monday morning, taking the death toll six, including telecom operators. Meanwhile, clashes broke out in various parts of Baramulla district after the news of the ex-militant's killing spread. According to sources 40-year-old Aijaz Ahmad Reshi, son of Abdul Rahim Reshi, was shot dead by militants this morning at his house in Mundaji area of Sopore town. Reshi was rushed to SDH, Sopore, where he succumbed to his injuries. Before his surrender, Reshi was affiliated with Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) militant outfit. Nowadays, he was running his own business in volatile area of Sopore town, sources said. Sources said that a pet dog chased one of the assailants and injured him but the other militant shot it dead. This is the second killing in two consecutive days and sixth in past three weeks. However, no militant group has owned responsibility for these three killings. Nazir Ahmad, a local, told Early Times that the killings in Sopore town had scared them. The blood had become cheaper in the town, our life had become hell with every passing day, he added. "Bullet and Blood have not only scared the general public and forced the locals to migrate from the area," he said. He said today's killing has taken the death toll in Sopore to six, four of which happened in a week's time. Meanwhile clashes broke out in Baramulla town, after news of the killing of the former militant spread. People, especially youth from Baramulla town, took to streets after the Reshi's killing. They raised anti-India slogans in Sopore and Baramulla townships, while a group of youth pelted stones on vehicles in Sangrama area after which shopkeepers were compelled to pull down their shutters. Police had to resort to tear-gas shelling to disperse protesters, pelting stones and shouting anti-government slogans. However, according to top government official, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had taken a serious view of the killings in Sopore and issued directions to the Home Department for stepping up investigations and providing secure environment to all civilians. The government is making all out efforts to ensure the safety and security of the innocent civilians in and around the Sopore town, said official. It is pertinent to mention here that militants killed an employee of health department Altaf Rehman Sheikh of New Colony Sopore on June 9. Sheikh was an activist of Hurriyat Conference (G). While on June 12, trade federation leader Khurshid Ahmad Bhat of Bomai Sopore was killed outside his residence. On June 14, Mehraj-Ud Din Dar (42), son of Mohammad Ahsann Dar of Badamibagh area of Sopore town was shot dead. Dar was a former militant. |
