Separatists call for shutdown against Sopore killings | Cycle of strikes returns to Valley | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 15: Separatists have announced a protest programme for this week against recent killings in Sopore, even as Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has taken a serious note of the killings. Different separatist groups, to make their presence felt on the ground, have launched a new protest calendar which is likely to swell up from next week. In their first programme, two factions of Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and JKLF led by Yasin Malik have called for complete shutdown on Wednesday, June 17 and Sopore 'Chalo' on Friday, June 19. Sources said that separatists are planning to make their 'Chalo programme of Friday successful and after that they will announce another protest calendar for next week. The protest programme was announced by Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik in consultation with each other, and according to sources, other separatist groups are likely to chip in soon. It may be recalled that Kashmir witnessed long seasons of protests and shutdowns in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and about 200 civilians were killed in clashes with police and paramilitary forces. Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen shot dead a man in Sopore in north Kashmir on Monday morning, taking the number of civilian killings by gunmen to six in last three weeks. The slain, a former militant of Harkatul Mujahideen outfit, was identified as Aijaz Ahmad Reshi, 40. He was gunned down in Mandji area of the town at around 8:30 am. No militant group has owned responsibility for these killings so far. Geelani, United Jihad Council chairman (UJC) Syed Salahuddin and Lashkar-i-Toiba militant outfit have blamed "Indian agencies" for these killings. Director General of Police K.Rajendra said that militants are behind the attacks on people in Sopore. Meanwhile, following the killing of yet another former militant in Sopore on Monday, Chief Minister Mufti has issued directions to the Home Department to step up investigations and provide secure environment to people in Sopore. The matter is also scheduled to be discussed in the meeting of the Unified Headquarters which has been convened on June 17.
