Pak ceasefire violations are no longer news | | | It is no longer news if Pakistani troops or Rangers resort to ceasefire viola tions on either the LOC or on the IB.It is definitely news if the Pakistani forces, guarding the border in Jammu and Kashmir,do not resort to ceasefire violation. Anything unusual is news. Which is usual is not news. Why is it not news when Pakistani forces resort to unprovoked ceasefire violations on the border in Jammu and Kashmir ?The reason is simple. When something happens or takes place for the first time or after a long gap it makes news. But when Pakistani troops or the Rangers have been repeatedly targeting Indian border outposts or the houses of villagers on the border it ceases to be news.It is no longer news when Pakistani forces keep their guns open during any time of the night or the day. This is what happened on Friday when Pakistan Rangers violated the ceasefire by resorting to unprovoked firing at the Border Security Force (BSF) positions in Jammu.Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing at BSF positions in Pargwal area of Akhnoor sector Pakistan firing started at 12 am and lasted for half an hour. The BSF effectively retaliated. No casualty or damage has been reported from the Indian side. How can ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops mean news for people, for the Government of India or for the Indian Army when the Pak guns keep on roaring intermittently. Yes, there are several reasons responsible for these ceasefire violations. The Friday ceasefire violation was an attempt by Pakistani forces to convey to the Indian Army that Pakistan is not Myanmar that has allowed the Indian forces to carry out anti-insurgency operations inside the border belt of Myanmar. Pakistan wanted to convey to India that its troops were alive and active to foil any attempt at crossing the border for smashing militant camps. Already Pakistan has warned India against thinking of carrying out Myanmar type anti-insurgency operations in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir. As is usual with Pakistani authorities, civilian and the military,India was reminded that since Pakistan has nuclear weapons India should not nurse any plan on repeating Myanmar type operation across Kashmir border. Since May last Pakistani troops and the Rangers have indulged in over 780 incidents of ceasefire violations. If not everywhere more than 5,000 civilian families, living in the border villages from Akhnoor to Kathua, had to flee to safer places after their houses were hit by gun and mortar fire in which several villagers were killed and several others wounded. Even if the Pakistani forces had no idea of killing civilians they had the plan of derailing peace and political stability in Jammu and Kashmir.Well to say that by resorting to repeated ceasefire violations Pakistan wanted to promote political instability may simply be an exercise on making things and events look very simple and ordinary. It is not that simple.Pakistan believes that by pounding Indian border outposts and civilian houses on the LOC and on the IB in Jammu and Kashmir Islamabad will be able to keep the Kashmir issue in the limelight which may,in the long run, motivate the international community to mount pressure on New Delhi for the settlement of the Kashmir issue.Well Friday's ceasefire violations could be an attempt at unnerving India's plan on carrying out Myanmar type operations across Kashmir borders when India has had no such plan. |
