Srinagar, July 8: : The Health and Medical Education departments are facing acute shortage of manpower with around 4500 gazetted and non-gazetted posts lying vacant.
Official sources informed that the government has failed to fill up thousands of vacancies in Health and Medical Education departments. "Around 1000 gazetted posts are lying vacant in the two departments including 500 vacancies in health and family welfare services, 100 vacancies in Medical Education department, 50 in Government Dental College, and around 150 posts are lying vacant in ISM and Drug and Food Control organization," a senior official said .
He said while around 3500 non-gazetted posts were lying vacant including 2800 posts in Health and Family Welfare department, Medical Education 500 and 200 in various other branches. "Though the government contemplated to terminate services of 300 doctors for not attending duties, no efforts have been made to fill up thousands of gazetted and non-gazetted vacancies," he said and added that due to non-filling of posts, hundreds of health care centres are facing dearth of medicos and paramedical staff."
The working of Health and Medical Education department has been badly affected in backdrop of last year September floods. The associated hospitals of GMC Srinagar suffered a massive damage with SMHS suffering 90 percent damage to its equipments worth Rs 200 crore and other hospitals sustained damage in the range of Rs 50 lakh to 1 crore.
The state government has submitted a proposal to the Centre seeking financial assistance to make these hospitals fully restored. However, Centre government has not released the funds despite months having passed since floods hit the state resulting the health care gets affected.
The doctor patient ratio in J&K is 1:2104 as against the recommendations of World Health Organization (WHO) of 1:1000, which is grossly in-sufficient.
Minister for Health and Medical Education department Lal Singh was not available for his comments.
