Separatists to hold joint protest rally on July 13 in downtown Srinagar | | Mukul Kesavan | 7/9/2015 12:08:49 AM |
| Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 8: In a show of unity the separatist leaders of Kashmir have decided to carry out a joint programme on July 13 on the occasion of Martyrs Day in the state. If allowed it would be after a long time that the separatist leaders would share a joint platform. Separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik have decided to carry out a rally in downtown Srinagar on July 13. Before this these leaders would offer the noon prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in the Nowhatta area of the downtown Srinagar. The proposal to carry out the joint rally was mooted out by the chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. As soon as the proposal reached the ears of chairman of hard-line faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, he wasted no time in accepting the proposal. At the same time Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik also gave his nod for the joint programme. According to the programme drawn up the separatist leaders would offer the noon prayers at Jamia Masjid and then move in a rally towards the Martyrs Graveyard at Naqshbandh Sahib. The separatist leaders are expected to address the participants of the rally at the martyrs' graveyard once the rally culminates. Significantly the separatist leaders have not called for any strike on July 13 as has been practice in the past. The separatist leaders said that since Eid-ul-Fitr is few days away the people should not observe strike in connection with the Martyrs Day. People have been asked to join the protest rally in good numbers. There are chances that the rally would not be allowed and the separatist leaders would be either arrested or kept under house arrest. Geelani continues to be under house arrest at his home in Hyderpora area whereas Mirwaiz Umar and Malik too can be arrested or put under house arrest if the need arises. In the past the state government would put the separatist leaders under house arrest and did not allow them to reach Martyrs Graveyard in Naqashbandh Sahib area in downtown Srinagar. The mainstream leaders would visit the graveyard and offer floral tributes to the people who laid down their lives while fighting against the autocratic rule in 1931. But this time around the only difference is that there would be no strike on July 13. If the July 13 programme is allowed by the government then there are chances that separatist leaders would hold a similar programme on July 17 that coincides with Jumat-ul-Vida (last Friday of Ramadan). It would be in place to mention here that arrested separatist leader and chairman of Muslim Deeni Mahaz (MDM) Mohammad Qasim Faktoo has asked Mirwaiz to invite Geelani and Malik to the Jumat-ul-Vida congregation at Jamia Masjid |
