Has PDP given up its AFSPA revocation demand? | Minister's confession of youth joining militancy shocking | | Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 8: What could be greater irony for the ruling Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) that at the time when the party pitches for the revocation of AFSPA from Kashmir, its senior Minister and government spokesman Naeem Akhtar confesses that the youth in valley are joining the militant ranks. Such a statement coming out from Mufti's close aide has not only surprised the BJP and other parties in JK but has also shaken the majority of the PDP camp here. The party which has been trumpeting decline in the militancy in the state has indeed for the first time made such a lofty remark which has given the clear signal that it wants AFSPA to remain in vogue in valley. Sources within the PDP divulged that such a remark of Naeem Akhtar will not only create issues for the party's functioning in valley but shall also directly hit the slogan of AFSPA revocation. "When we say AFSPA must be revoked from Kashmir valley, we substantiate such a slogan by our claim that the situation in valley is improving and warrants revocation of AFSPA" said a PDP leader. The PDP contested 2008 and 2014 elections on the promise of revoking the AFSPA from Kashmir valley. Now, all of a sudden at present when Naeem Ahhtar has spilled beans, his statement is likely to prove counterproductive for the party and it could be understood that the party no longer, from now one, can out of the vocals make a louder cry that the situation in Kashmir is stable and normal. As one senior PDP leader pointed out that we cannot ask for the AFSPA revocation when we are ourselves admitting that the youth in Kashmir are joining militancy- a trend which could never allow a sane person to render army powerless to counter.
