Modi needs to help Mufti for success of political experiment | | | The BJP General Secretary,Ram Madhav, has stated that the BJP-PDP coalition Government will not compromise on state's integrity by supporting the separatists. He believes that the coalition Government will try to strengthen the state’s integration with rest of the country and wishes to inform critics of the coalition Government that there was no question of surrendering before separatist elements who preach sedition. This way Ram Madhav does not want to dictate terms to the PDP by dishing out threats of snapping ties which his party colleague,Dr Nirmal Singh, has done in Jammu. The Deputy Chief Minister has said the BJP would not compromise on national interests in J&K and pull out of the PDP-led government "if it feels that it has become difficult to continue in the ruling coalition government"."Our coalition in J&K is not an ideological alliance, but an alliance of governance. No doubt problems arise because we have our own agenda and the coalition partner has a different agenda. The day the BJP feels that it has become difficult to continue in the coalition, we will opt out of the government," Nirmal Singh has said. One wishes to ask Dr Nirmal Singh whether the PDP leadership has asked the BJP to compromise on the national interests. The BJP Minister should know it that the PDP is a mainstream political party that supports the state's accession with India though it does favour friendly ties between India and Pakistan which could be made possible by increasing the level of crossborder trade and people to people contact. It seems that the PDP is yet to make things difficult for the BJP because Nirmal Singh has dished out a threat that the BJPwill opt out of the Government if it feels the PDP follows a different agenda which can make BJP's continuance in the coalition Government somewhat difficult.Well has Nirmal Singh dished out the threat of quitting the Government simply to gain some of the ground that the party had lost soon after joining hands with the PDP for sharing power ? It seems so.But such threats may not allow the Deputy Chief Minister and the BJP to regain the ground that the two had lost in the province of Jammu which is considered to be a stronghold for the BJP.That the region of Jammu is BJP's area of influence is evident from the way it bagged 11 of the 37 seats in 2008 election and won 25 seats in the 2015 Assembly poll. Well the BJP led NDA Government should help the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd Sayeed, in implementing various development projects and in fulfilling the aspirations of those affected by floods in September 2014 and early this year because several thousand families have lost their property and other assets. Why the BJP led NDA Government should open the strings of its purse to provide liberal financial assistance to the PDP led coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir? The answer is simple. The PDP has rendered bigger sacrifice by sharing power with the BJP even knowing that for majority of people in the Kashmir valley the BJP is an "untouchable" politcal organisation. It was hence a risk for the BJP which had won 25 seats in the state Assembly. The Muftis rejected the offer of support from what then was called the grand alliance of National Conference and the Congress. The Mufti could have formed a durable Government had he accepted the support and even participation by the Congress and the National Conference. It was a unique political experiment that was conducted by Mufti sayeed which received support from the BJP high command.Dr Nirmal Singh needs to realise the degree of sacrifice rendered by the Mufti and take note of the desirability of the first time experiment of forming a coalition Government having representation from all the three regions with peoples' representatives from Jammu having a lion's share in the Government. Hence Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, should support this experiment by releasing liberal funds to the coalition Government which could help the Mufti to change the face of Jammu and Kashmir especially the need for resolving the energy crisis. |
