Eid marked by protests in summer capital, other parts of Kashmir | SEPARATISTS PUT UNDER HOUSE ARREST BY AUTHORITIES | |  Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 18: Protests broke out in some areas of downtown Srinagar and also in the uptown Hyderpora area of the city. Police lobbed scores of smoke shells on the protesters in order to disperse them. Protests were also carried out in South and North Kashmir. Reports said that as soon as the congregational Eid prayers were over at Eidgah a group of people appeared near the Tibetan Colony and started pelting stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. Police and CRPF personnel tried to control the protesters, but they failed to do so. As the protests at the Tibetan Colony were going on yet another group of people mostly youth coming from the Safa Kadal area reached the Sekidafar Chowk. These people attacked the CRPF bunker at the Sekidafar Chowk. Here too the police and CRPF personnel resorted to teargas shelling on the protesters. Pellets were also fired by security forces personnel in order to control the situation. The protests spread to the nearby areas and in no time groups of youth started pelting stones on police and CRPF personnel. Protests were witnessed in the Kawdara Chowk, Rajouri Kadal, Safa Kadal and Ganderpora localities. The protesters pelted stones and bricks on the police and CRPF personnel and same was retaliated by the other side. Reports said that police and CRPF personnel lobbed scores of smoke shells on the protesters. The ding dong battle carried on for hours together and there was total chaos in the areas where protests took place. Some of the police and CRPF personnel sustained minor injuries during the protests. Near Eidgah a group of protesters could be seen waving the Pakistani flag while as some of the ISIS flags were also displayed during the protests. The protests led to problems for the people who were returning after offering the Eid prayers at Eidgah. These people had to adopt alternate routes in order to reach their respective destinations. In the Hyderpora area scores of youth appeared on the main road after offering Eid prayers and pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel. There was heavy stone pelting in the area and it was only after intense teargas shelling that the protesters got dispersed. The protests affected the movement of traffic on the ever busy new Airport Road. The youth were protesting against the continuous detention of political prisoners and youth who were arrested recently on charges of stone pelting from different areas of downtown Srinagar. Chairman of hard-line faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani had asked people to hold half an hour protests after the Eid prayers. Meanwhile, reports from Anantnag in South Kashmir and Sopore in North Kashmir said that police and CRPF personnel used force and lobbed smoke shells on people who carried out protests after the Eid Nimaz. There are reports that Pakistani and ISIS flags waved in the Anantnag town during the protests. Pertinently, Geelani along with chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik were put under house arrest. These separatist leaders were not allowed to offer the Eid prayers.
