Congress to suspend Charak, Aziz, Vakil for anti-party activities | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 18: After two month long suspense, the Congress high command is learnt to have finally decided for suspension of three senior leaders of the party in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the sources in Congress circles, former ministers and senior leaders Gulchain Singh Charak, Prem Sagar Aziz and Abdul Ghani Vakil are likely to be suspended from the party for their alleged party activities. Following vice-president Rahul Gandhi's nod, the All India Congress Disciplinary Action Committee headed by A K Antony has approved the proposal for suspension of these three leaders for indefinite period and a formal order in this regard is likely to be issued within days, sources explained. It may be recalled that the PCC Disciplinary Action Committee had issued show cause notices to Gulchain Singh Charak, Prem Sagar Aziz and Abdul Ghani Vakil for their alleged anti-party activities for the past some time, particularly after the constitution of Pradesh Congress Committee by the new president G A Mir. However, neither the dissident leaders replied to the show cause notice, nor the party high command took any decision on fate of the trio as an attempt for a patch-up between G A Mir and the third front of dissident camp was on. Pertinent to mention that the third front of dissidents has blessings of former Chief Minister and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad. However, party high command's decision of taking disciplinary action against the three dissident leaders has forced Mr Azad to maintain a distance from the Third Front. This was the reason that a parallel function was organized by dissidents for paying tributes to G L Dogra in Jammu yesterday despite Mr Azad's presence in the main function. Sources informed that PCC president G A Mir and Senior vice-president Sham Lal Sharma forced the party high command to take a stern action against the dissidents. Both the leaders recently met the high command separately and made it clear that it would be difficult for them to keep the house in order if no action is taken against the dissidents, sources said. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the Third Front of dissident group is also busy in chalking out further course of action in the wake of party high command's decision of taking action against three of them. In the wake of suspension, sources said, a mass resignation is likely to be tendered by the Third Front leaders.
